How to Prepare for Yellowbrow
Yellowbrow is the final boss of Chapter 3, found in New Thunderclap Temple at the very end Mahavira Hall.
The temple grounds are quite large, and to the right before you reach the room is another building where you can fight the optional boss Not pureIt’s worth fighting this boss as well as all the other bosses and optional challenges now since we’re nearing the end of the chapter, and any extra XP and sparks gained will be in your favor.
Much like with Captain Wise-Voice, Yellowbrow uses lightning-based attacks that can inflict the Shock status, so it will be worth having some Anti-shock powder with you as well as increase your shock resistance either with armor or by trading Mental Cores with the dog Xu from Chapter 2. Since he is more of a threat with magic than physical attacks, we also recommend equip Cloud Step rather than Rock Solid, then reallocate Spark points to that accordingly, including increasing the damage of a critical hit when using the spell.
While this fight is actually made up of several different phases in different locations, the good news is that they have checkpoints, so you won’t have to start the entire fight from scratch if you die.
How to defeat Yellowbrow (1st encounter)
This is definitely the easiest phase of the fight. While a giant monk is more than twice your size, Yellowbrow moves quite slowlyby attacking with his staff, which he can swing or smash into the ground, or by stomping on you. These attacks are slow enough to be easy to dodge, but what makes them even more problematic is that they are all charged with lightning energy, so being hit will also inflict an electric shock.
It’s best to try to use your resources early on if you want this phase of the fight to be quick, so use Immobilizepreferably when in the middle of an attack animation, use Wandering Wight’s spirit attack to stun him, as well as Wind Tamer Ship to temporarily boost your defense. For any attacks you’re unsure of the timing of, especially when charging one, use Cloud Step to dodge it, then approach with a critical counter, which can also stun it and prevent it from attacking.
Focus on full combos and targeted heavy attacksas all of this can also stun him and make him vulnerable to more free hits. He will sometimes escape your attack by teleporting, sometimes reappearing on the other side of the room, but rather than ambushing you, he will simply stand there and taunt you, so rush in and interrupt him with more attacks.
When Yellowbrow is at a third of his health bar, he will become a little more serious and begin charge parts of the ground with lightning-based area attacks or send lightning streaks towards you, which is your cue to get out of their range. He will also try to teleport away, then raise his staff into the air to charge up a powerful lightning attack, but when this happens, rush at him and perform a full light attack combo on him or a targeted heavy attack and it should stun him completely.
You should complete this phase without too much trouble, and since each phase has checkpoints, you don’t have to worry about burning through your mana or gourd resources too quickly. Of course, this is just the beginning, and a cutscene will play out in which Yellowbrow traps you in his jar.
At this point, you will have to fight Macaque Chief once more, but this time you will have Zhu Bajie’s help. If you are killed during this phase, you will respawn at the Mahavira Hall shrine, but you will thankfully not have to fight Yellowbrow again. Once this fight is over, you will fall back to another part of the temple where you will encounter Yellowbrow again in his second, more powerful phase.
How to defeat Yellowbrow (2nd encounter)
The good news is that if you get killed by Yellowbrow in this phase, you respawn at a checkpoint in this deeper part of the new Thunderclap Temple and can just go back to try again. However, this is just a spawn point rather than a shrine, so you will not have the ability to re-specialize your abilities or craft new equipment or medicines here.
Yellowbrow’s new trick in this phase is that it can turn into goldmaking him essentially invulnerable to attacks since your staff will bounce off him, and also increasing his size. During this time, he will charge his staff with lightning, which he will then strike you with, and it won’t just be the staff strikes you’ll have to watch out for, but also the shockwaves that will then travel along the ground.
Fortunately, while you won’t be able to use combos against him when he’s gold, It only takes a few charged hits to knock him out of his golden formeventually staggering him back to his normal form. It’s best to charge up concentrated heavy attacks in this case, and any stance should do the trick. Then, once he’s back to his original form, he’ll be left free for you to do a free combo.
When he’s down to a third of his health, Yellowbrow lets out a roar that stuns you and stops you from moving, then he plunges his staff into the ground, sending lightning bolts all around him. A cutscene will play as he hits you with an attack, which takes a lot of damage – rather unfair considering it’s a mandatory cutscene (if you’re low on health at that point, it shouldn’t kill you, but it should reduce you to your last pixel of health). At least the cutscene can be skipped if you need to replay the fight. Needless to say, once you regain control, heal immediately.
Second phase
The next phase is very similar to its very first phase, as he can disappear for a while then teleport to another part of the arenaand he will continue to swing and slam his lightning-laden scepter that you will also have to dodge. He can also still turn to gold, so you need to work on getting him out of that status before you can actually deal damage yourself.
When Yellowbrow is down to the last third of his health bar, he unleashes another roaring shockwave, and another cutscene plays out as you are targeted by a devastating attack that unfairly takes away a large chunk of your health. Hopefully you still have a few drops of your healing canteen to spare, because once again, you’ll need to heal immediately
Third phase
This last phase is the same as the previous one, including how in the first fight he can also charge up a huge lightning blast, unless you can deal enough damage to stagger him. Of course, he can also do this in his golden form, which presents more difficulty. Ideally, you will have saved some abilities for this last part of the fight.. If you are equipped The Wandering Spirit of Wight then this transformation attack alone should be able to knock him out of his golden form. Otherwise, you can also use Wind Tamer to boost your defense or transform into a yaoguai to absorb attacks. Rock Guai is best in this case because the damage he takes also quickly increases his ability to use his special move.
Otherwise, keep dodging his lightning based attacksmaking sure to use Shock Powder if you get hit by the Shock status, then exploiting his openings while using spells like Immobilize and Cloud Step if you have any mana left, and that should be enough to whittle his Yellow Eyebrow down to the last of his hit points.
