How to get a chocobo mount in Final Fantasy 16

Chocobo, Fantasy, Final, mount

You can still get a chocobo mount In Final Fantasy 16 despite its darker and more mature history.

Riding a chocobo will make traversing large open-field maps much faster once Final Fantasy 16 opens up later in the story. And, while you’re having fun with the real-time combat, sometimes you really want to get past them easily to focus on hitting a side quest marker or hunting target.

So how do you ride a chocobo? It’s not something that can be done early in the game (in fact, you might be shocked to find you can fight a wild chocobo before then), but you won’t be riding just any chocobo. Instead, it will be Clive’s white chocobo Ambrosiathat you will remember seeing in the prologue.

This guide will tell you how to reunite Ambrosia with and unlock the ability to ride a chocobo mount in Final Fantasy 16.

How to unlock a chocobo mount in Final Fantasy 16

To unlock the chocobo mount in Final Fantasy 16, you will first need to have played through to the time jump in the story where you will have a main storyline quest called “The Gathering Storm”, which will take you to Martha’s Rest.

Luckily, this is also where you’ll find a new side quest called “The White-Winged Wonder.” The quest giver is Rowan, Traveling Trader, whom you may have recognized from an earlier quest called “What a Bird Wants”. It can be found southeast of the village by the bridge next to a chocobo.

You’ll also notice that the green icon above his head has a plus symbol instead of the usual exclamation mark. You will want to pay attention to these quests in the future, as they indicate that completing these quests will unlock a new feature or upgrade.

Talk to Rowan and he’ll tell you about sightings of a mysterious chocobo by the name of Whiteheart who protects other wild chocobos from bandits. Accept this quest and you’ll basically investigate this sighting on your own.

Leave Martha’s Rest and follow the quest marker south, picking up signs, first of a white feather, then bandit bodies following a presumably skirmish with this feathered vigilante.

Eventually, the quest marker will take you to the southwest of the map, near a place called Crooked Nash’s Pier. There you will find a herd of chocobo, led by a white chocobo, cornered by a group of poachers.

After a cutscene, enter and deal with the poachers. There are a lot of them but, with your Eikon abilities, you can use them quickly. Another wave of enemies will appear once they are taken care of – a pack of harrier dogs and a huge hunter armed with an axe.

The hunter is a little tougher as it also has a will gauge, but that’s not something that should phase you at this point. Just watch out for his big ax swings and use Garuda’s Tower Gambit to counter and knock him down.

Once the fight is over, Clive will approach the white chocobo before noticing an injury to his left eye which confirms it is indeed your old chocobo Ambrosia. What a touching reunion!

Rowan shows up soon after and does a custom tack that will allow you to ride Ambrosia again. Additionally, you will receive 250 XP, 20 Fame Points, and 60 Sharp Fang Materials. You can now also view Ambrosia’s Tack as a collectible in Clive’s Chambers at the Hideaway.

How to Ride Chocobos in Final Fantasy 16

Now that you’ve unlocked chocobo mounts in Final Fantasy 16, here’s how you can use them on your journey to Valisthea.

While Ambrosia is reunited with Clive, she actually remains in the wild with her herd. The good news is that this means you can summon her by holding R3 wherever you are in an open field and she will magically appear nearby, while you press X next to her to ascend. Because she travels with her herd, this also means that any party members that come with you will also have a chocobo to ride.

You can dismount by holding R3, which will usually cause Ambrosia to disappear immediately, so you’ll need to hold R3 to re-summon her. There are also times when Clive will automatically drop down either because it’s a story quest, or because you’ve encountered a target monster for a hunt, or because you’ve reached a place where he says he can. just walk from there. You also cannot summon Ambrosia in a village area such as Martha’s Rest or Lostwing.

When riding Ambrosia, you can hold R2 to speed up galloping across, or use L2 to brake and slow down. The main benefit of using a chocobo mount, however, is traversing open fields at a faster rate, which also means you can avoid a lot of fights. Make sure to gallop past the enemies, as some may catch up to you and knock Clive off his mount!

Although the prompts aren’t displayed on screen, you can press X to jump while riding Ambrosia and you can even attack enemies with Square, although the damage really doesn’t do much unless you encounter very low level enemies. Again, this reinforces that supports are primarily for fast traversal.

Have fun riding your chocobo in Valisthea!
