Fireflies at sunset in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be caught and used to brew effective stealth elixirs when mixed with monster parts in a cooking pot. Don’t try to add them to meals though, we did and Link ended up eating something he probably shouldn’t have eaten.
Catching any creature or bug in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom comes with its challenges, and for most, the biggest challenge is figuring out where they will spawn. Also, some insects and creatures are finicky, which can make them difficult to catch, especially when enemies are around.

How to Get Sunset Fireflies in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
There are several ways to get Sunset Fireflies in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, one way requires patience, a bit of exploration and stealth. The other way just requires you to visit a specific stable with a few rupees. We’ve broken down each way to get a Sunset Firefly below.
Catch fireflies at sunset
If you’ve explored Hyrule at night, you’ve probably come across sunset fireflies hanging around specific areas. You can catch sunset fireflies if you are calm, quick and if your enemies don’t decide to spoil your night.
If you’re trying to catch a Sunset Firefly, we recommend crouching down and walking very slowly as these insects are really finicky. The slower you walk towards the Firefly, the less noise you’ll make and the less chance of spooking them. Also, if you’re having trouble catching one, then grabbing a stealth boosting meal or elixir is a good idea.
Now, once you approach a Sunset Firefly, the capture prompt should appear and all you have to do is quickly press “A” to capture them.
If the capture prompt doesn’t appear, you need to get closer to them until it does. You can do this by continuing to slowly walk towards them or you can approach them and dash around trying to catch them. However, if you do this and fail, the firefly will leave and you might scare the rest of the area away.
Also, if there are enemies nearby that spot you and charge at you or sound their horns, the Sunset Fireflies will be startled and scatter. If this happens, as it has for us on several occasions (thanks Bokoblins), we recommend eliminating the enemies and the fireflies may return after a short time if it is still dark and the weather remains clear .
Buy Sunset Fireflies
If Bokoblins and bad weather have foiled your attempts to catch one, then you can buy sunset fireflies from Beedle to Hyrule Stable. We’ve marked the exact location on the map below, and the coordinates for Hyrule Stable are 0518, -3442, 0047.
Talk to Beedle (they usually hang around outside the stable) and they’ll sell you sunset fireflies for 10 rupees each.
Sunset Firefly locations in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
The surface area of Hyrule in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is huge, so it makes sense that there are multiple areas and locations where sunset fireflies will spawn. However, there are a few patterns and things to consider that can help you find those valuable bugs.
- Good weather – We haven’t found or seen sunset fireflies if the weather is stormy or rainy, they only seem to breed on a clear, calm day. However, if it’s raining in an area where they should be, stick with it. If the weather clears up and it’s still dark, the fireflies might just appear.
- Wet, Woods, Swamp, Swamp – Sunset Fireflies seem to like hanging out in dense wooded areas, wetland areas, and swampy/swampy areas. We haven’t found any spawns in the open grasslands yet – so if you want some, it’ll be worth sticking to one of the old area types.
- deep night – We found a few fireflies before midnight in Hyrule, but we often found huge packs of them between midnight and 3am.
Below we’ve listed all of the Sunset Firefly locations in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that we’ve found so far, and we’ll add to this list as we explore more of the Kingdom at night.
