Potion hoarding is a thing of the past in Final Fantasy 16 like Clive has a inventory pouch which can only contain a limited number of consumable items, such as healing potions or strength and defense boosting tonics, while excess potions are automatically consumed.
For starters, you can carry a maximum of four potions, three ascended potions, two strength tonics, and two stone skin tonics in Final Fantasy 16.
While you can usually pick up consumables during quests and action steps, it’s still useful to be able to carry a few extra with you when facing a particularly tough boss.
Fortunately, it is possible to increase Clive’s inventory size by completing an optional quest called weird sciencethen another quest called An even weirder science. This guide will tell you how to start these quests and how to complete them.

How to start Weird Science in Final Fantasy 16
To start Weird Science in Final Fantasy 16, you must first have reached the main storyline quest called “Out of the Shadow”. This will be after encountering a character at the Hideaway called Mid and adding a new area under the Atrium to the west of the map called Mid’s Dungeon.
You will notice a quest marker with a plus symbol in Mid’s Dungeon. Head up and down the stairs to Mid’s Dungeon and you’ll find a character called Owain, Engineer who is the quest giver for Weird Science.
He will explain to you that he is working on a new invention but that he needs bomb ashes. This material can only be gathered by killing a Bomb King, an enemy Final Fantasy fans should be familiar with. If you accept the quest, this rare enemy will appear as an invoice on the hunt board, giving you the information you need regarding its whereabouts.
It’s time to go hunting!
How to find and defeat Bomb King in Final Fantasy 16
Bomb King is a level 33 enemy and a rank B hunt, so you should be fairly evenly matched at this point in the story if you’ve taken on other hunts and quests as well.
It is in a gated area known as The Crock in Sanbreque. The nearest fast travel location is The Dragon’s Aery. From there, summon your chocobo and ride south then follow a narrow path to the southeast. Before you reach the end of this path, there is an even narrower path to the left, which will take you to the Crock where Bomb King is waiting for you.
Bomb King doesn’t seem too formidable, appearing smaller than in past appearances and also lacking in willpower like similar enemies on the kill board. Still, he moves pretty fast and naturally enjoys throwing fire-based attacks. Abilities to look out for are Coronation, where it charges up with a fiery aura before spitting a massive fireball at you, and Witan, where it charges up and then performs a ground pound AOE.
These can be dodged so you can easily follow up a precision dodge with a meter to get close to melee hits and all of Eikon’s powerful abilities like Titan’s Windup. Remember, there’s no Willpower gauge to knock out, so just focus on using whatever deals the most damage.
Where it gets a little tricky is when Bomb King starts summoning bomb minions with a move called King’s Justice. These enemies will also spit flames at you, which you’ll want to dodge. As you reduce Bomb King’s health, he will continue to summon more bombs with this move.
The best thing to do is save Eikon abilities that deal high AOE damage, such as Titan’s Earth Fury or Phoenix’s Rebirth Flames, for those moments so you can deal with those bombs quickly.
Defeating Bomb King will net you 1,000 XP, 65 Ability Points, 9,000 Gil, and 20 Fame Points. You’ll also get Bomb Ember, an important crafting material if you’re looking to craft Excalibur.
But back to the current quest, you are looking for bomb ash. Fortunately, Bomb King will have left this material, so you only need to collect three of them after the fight.
How to Complete Weird Science and Rewards in Final Fantasy 16
Once you collect the bomb ash, return to the shelter, talk to Owain again, and hand over the bomb ash when prompted. With this material, he is now able to build his new invention, the Telamon still.
The bottom line is that this contraption can create new compounds, and as a thank you, Owain produces a mysterious compound that, when applied to Clive’s potion bag, increases its elasticity. Strange science, dubious science? Either way, this now means Clive can carry more consumables with him than before.
With this Treated Potions Satchel, you can now carry a maximum of six potions, four Ascended Potions, three Strength Tonics, and three Stoneskin Tonics. Additionally, you will earn a black blood, 900 XP and 40 fame points.
How to Start the Even Weirdest Science in Final Fantasy 16
If you have completed Weird Science, you can also continue with another quest to maximize your inventory capacity. This will be after you get much further into the story and unlock the main scenario quest “Across the Narrow”.
Again, the quest comes from Owain in Mid Dungeon, so talk to him again to find out he has another new invention, but this time you need to get Spherical Echoes. This won’t require a difficult hunt like the previous quest, but will require you to walk between three Fallen Ruins in Valisthea.
These ruins are:
- lost feather located in Rosaria, with the nearest fast travel point being Auldhyl Docks
- Advent located in Sanbreque, southwest of Northreach
- silent swamp in the Republic of Dhalmekian, south of Echoes of Krozjit
The areas you need to reach are also roughly highlighted in green on the terrain maps, so knowing where you need to go is pretty straightforward.
How to complete science and even weirder rewards in Final Fantasy 16
In each of the above locations, you need to collect a spherical echo, but you can’t do that until you’ve taken care of the sentry enemies patrolling the ruins. These enemies are level 36-38, which you should be well suited against at this point in the story. Simply deploy your Eikon abilities and you’ll get through these encounters without breaking a sweat.
Once you’ve collected the Spherical Echoes from each of the three locations, return to Owain at the safehouse and hand him the materials he will use to build the Telamon Furnace.
Thanks to this new invention, Owain is able to replace the clasp on Clive’s potions bag with an unusually elastic metal, which somehow means you can carry even more consumables.
The enlarged potion satchel increases your maximum inventory capacity to eight potions, five ascended potions, four strength tonics, and three stone skin tonics. The quest also nets you a Goblin Coin, 4,800 XP, and 50 Fame.
Congratulations on maxing out your inventory capacity, which should serve you well in the challenges of Final Fantasy 16!
