How Leveling Works in Modern Warfare 2
When playing Modern Warfare 2, you can progress in two ways:
- By effectively using a weapon and gaining Weapon XP, which will increase your weapon level.
- Completing objectives and killing enemies with any weapon or piece of gear will earn you Player XP and make your player level ascend.
Let’s discuss them one by one.
weapon level unlocks pistol attachments and camouflage challenges. However, each attachment is not unique to the weapon you unlocked it with – you can use that same attachment with any other compatible weapon.
Something similar happens with base camos you can get from completing challenges, although Completionist camos – such as the Gold camo – are exclusive to this weapon.
On the other hand, making progress in your player level unlocks weapons, killstreaks, lethal and tactical gear, field upgrades, perks, and loadouts.
You start at rank one and can climb all the way up to rank 55, with each rank asking for more player XP each time you move up to the next.
The fastest ways to level up in Modern Warfare 2
Several things you do during a match in any Modern Warfare 2 mode can give you both player and weapon XP.
For example, killing an enemy is the easiest and it will usually give you 100 XP – this can change depending on what mode you’re playing and if the killing happened under special circumstances, like protecting or avenging an ally.
However, if you want to level up quickly, you’ll need more specific ways to earn large amounts of XP in a short time.
The following are the best ways to level up quickly.
Use Double XP Tokens
Use Double XP tokens to help you reach the desired level faster. There are tokens for your player level and for your weapon level.
These tokens double the total amount of XP you have earned at the end of a match. However, you’ll only get a limited number if you’ve completed the campaign, and they’re time-limited.
Complete Daily Challenges – in Multiplayer and Special Ops
Second, a great way to earn nice amounts of player XP without too much trouble is to complete daily challenges. You get three per day, and they give you 2,500 XP each time you complete one.
These challenges usually have simple objectives, like getting three headshots with snipers, killing a certain number of enemies with a certain advantage, or just defeating a certain number of enemies.
Once you complete the three daily challenges you have, you will unlock a bonus challenge. This one rewards you with 10,000 XP upon completion, and its objective is like the others, but usually with more kills or other details.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Spec Ops (the co-op missions) have their own set of daily challenges and bonuses, which means you can complete many challenges per day by playing different modes.

Play the most effective modes
The last thing you need to know is which modes give you the most XP in the shortest time.
Although the amount of XP you earn depends on how well you perform in a match and how many objectives you complete, there are some modes that might be much easier for you to gain experience quickly.
For example, one tip is to avoid any mode that has a purpose other than killing enemy soldiers. Domination, Headquarters, Hardpoint and others will give you extra XP for completing objectives, but these are usually up to you and your teammates, and some of them even have limited respawns.
The best modes to choose for leveling up quickly are ones that focus primarily on defeating enemies, like Free-For-All, Team Deathmatch, and Kill Confirmed.
You’ll normally earn 100 XP for every kill you get, and that’s not to mention assists, grab dog tags (the item dropped by allies and rivals in Kill Confirmed), or defeat enemies under special conditions.
These modes have the fastest respawn time, they don’t limit your life, and you just have to focus on that basic goal.
Finally, there is a specific mode that takes all these advantages and adds a new one: Invasion. In this mode, you will fight large 20v20 battles on large maps.
The trick here is that both sides will also have a lot of bots, which are usually easier to kill than a real player, and they aren’t as skilled. When you find a bot, it’s usually accompanied by others, which can mean several free kills if you get the chance.
If you’re lucky, you can use powerful killstreaks as the Juggernaut or grab a vehicle and just smash your rivals over and over again. Poor computer-controlled soldiers won’t even know what’s going on.
Hopefully, you’ll find yourself at Rank 55 and with your favorite weapons at max level in no time by following these tips.
