Is Enshrouded multiplayer?

YesEnshrouded is a multiplayer game that you can play with up to 16 players either by hosting a world, joining a friend’s world, or setting up a server to play with friends.

You can also play Enshrouded in single player mode if teaming up isn’t your thing.

How to play multiplayer in Enshrouded

There are two ways to play a multiplayer session in Enshrouded:

  • Host or join a local multiplayer world.
  • Create or join a world of dedicated servers.

Choose “Host” from the “Play” menu to select a world – or create a new one – to play with your friends, but be aware that you must be online for your friends to play in that world.

The Enshrouded “Play” menu displays options to play privately, host a local multiplayer save, or join a multiplayer game.

After selecting the world you want to play in with your friends and changing the maximum number of players you want to join, click the “Play” button on that world, then set up a password if you don’t want strangers join. Your friends can then find you by searching for that world in the “Join” menu and entering the password you created.

If you want to have a world that all your friends can play in, whether the creator is online or not, you’ll want to create a server instead. Setting one up is a bit tricky if you’ve never done it before, so check out our guide on how to set up a dedicated server in Enshrouded if you want to go that route.

The process for joining a dedicated server multiplayer game is the same: find the world name in the “Join” menu, then enter the password.

We’ve explained multiplayer in more detail below, but keep in mind that even if you buy a dedicated server and have your friends come and go as they please – quests are currently not repeatable. This means you miss out on XP gains and quest progress if you’re not online when quests are completed in that world.

Wrapped Multiplayer Progression Explained

Don’t worry about losing characters while playing multiplayer, because characters can freely trade between servers. This means you can take them into a friend’s game and level up just like you would in a private single-player world, then take that same character with you to any other world you want.

No matter what world they’re in, your characters keep their:

  • Equipment.
  • Inventory.
  • Levels.
  • SKILLS.
  • Map memory (locations and fog of war removed).
  • Personal crafting recipes (crafts that don’t require a workbench).
  • Previously collected Shroud Roots (you cannot farm Shroud Roots when creating new worlds).
  • Previously found story texts and tutorials.
  • Tricks you found for yourself.

However, the characters not to keep:

  • The majority of crafting recipes (they depend on the NPCs and crafting stations unlocked in the world).
  • NPCs available for summoning.
  • Tours found by others and shared with the group.

When it comes to the multiplayer progression of the world itself, you are at the mercy of the host, as he can play in a world he created offline at any time, but his friends must join him while he actively hosts to play. You can get around this by purchasing and playing on a dedicated server.

Finally, remember that if you don’t play when your friends complete quests, you won’t get XP and you won’t be able to complete those quests yourself when you return to that world.

How does multiplayer work in Enshrouded?

If you and your friends are playing on a locally hosted multiplayer world configured from the “Host” section of the “Play” menu, then the friend who initially created (and subsequently hosts) that world must be online and actively hosting it for your friends to play. This can be a world already created by a player or a completely new one created solely for multiplayer purposes. The original creator can then play this world offline from the “Private” section of the “Play” menu.

You can get around these host requirements by purchasing a dedicated server, but remember that the quests are currently not repeatablewhich means you miss out on XP gains and quest progression if you’re not online when your friends complete quests in that world.

The maximum number of players allowed on a world in Enshrouded is 16, but you can set this number lower if you don’t need it (or your CPU can’t handle it).

At the time of writing, there is no PvP mode in Enshrouded, and PvP is not planned. However, the official PvP section of the Multiplayer FAQ states that “Maybe, but just maybe, we’ll add some modes in the future just for some fun on the side.”
