Besides Cal Kestis’ clever traversal abilities, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor introduces the possibility of ride animals to move around as you explore the galaxy, some of which are essential to advancing the campaign.
You’ll first encounter Nekko, bird-like creatures (i.e. Star Wars Chocobo!) on planet Koboh, except you’ll find you can’t ride them right away, at least not without tame them beforehand.
This guide will explain how to tame and ride animals, what kind of rideable animals are in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and where you can find them.

Animal Locations in Star Wars Jedi Survivor
There are three animals to ride in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and they feature on two of the game’s six planets.
The Relter is a winged creature and the first animal you can ride. These are found in Koboh and usually in very specific areas used to cross by air, so they are also used in very specific ways.
The Nekko is an avian type mount also found in Koboh. You’ll be able to tame your first Nekko in an area called Nekko Pools, but you’ll also find plenty of them wandering around in the wild. They’re also the only animal you can take to the stables in Rambler’s Reach for herding, so if there’s one of a certain color that you particularly like, be sure to bring it back to the stables.
The Spamel is a large camel-like creature with legs as long as an AT-AT, making it a very nimble mount for traversing the Jedha desert where it finds itself. You’ll unlock it as part of the story when you first arrive on the planet Jedha shortly after meeting Merrin.

How to Tame and Ride Animals in Star Wars Jedi Survivor
While you can’t immediately tame a Nekko when you first arrive on Koboh, the good news is that the taming ability is unlocked as you progress through the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor story. , and it happens on the same planet.
This happens when you reach an area in Koboh called Forest Array. As you progress through this section, you will eventually encounter another animal called Relter, a flying creature that you can also ride. Here you will be prompted to tame the Relter by simply pressing R1/RB. It’s the same button as using your Jedi mind powers, but without the extra input.
After that, you’ll be able to summon a Nekko or Spamel by simply pressing R1/RB when there’s one near you. Then simply approach the animal and click the right stick to mount it and descend by pressing Circle/B.
Using a Relter is a slightly different process as you only have to tame the very first one. After that, you’ll find Relters floating around at designated spots in Koboh. To ride one, you just need to get under them, then jump to grab its talons, then it will take flight.
Relters are controlled more like gliders as they gradually descend as you step up onto their talons. You can use the analog stick to control them to glide over large parts of the map to areas that might otherwise be inaccessible. There are also occasions where you will pass updrafts that increase your altitude.
Nekko are useful for climbing slippery slopes such as those with flowing water that Cal cannot cross on his own. You can also use them to do a double jump, which Cal can use to gain extra height to reach platforms he otherwise couldn’t reach himself.
You can also fight while riding a Nekko, swinging your lightsaber with Square/X to take down stormtroopers and other enemies. Once you unlock the blaster’s stance later in the game, you can also use it for ranged combat by pressing Triangle/Y.
A Spamel is essential for traversing the harsh Jedha desert, and you can click the left stick so it can sprint, a feature that unlocks as you progress through the story. Its size means it can also be useful in battle by crushing enemies, although you can also press Square/X to make it stomp anything nearby!
That’s everything you need to know about taming and driving animals in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While you won’t encounter them much throughout your journey, their addition certainly adds variety on top of everything Cal will do on the walls and in the air. There are many fun ways to get around this galaxy!
