How to build in Sons of the Forest
The way the build works on Sons of the Forest is a mix of following instructions from the book with a little creativity on your side. Although it may seem difficult at first, this system actually allows you to have more freedom to build things.
The first method you can use to build structures in Sons of the Forest is based on stacking or connecting certain materials, such as sticks, logs, and even skulls! It gives you a lot of freedom and space to use your creativity to some degree, mainly because you don’t need a recipe to create things. For example, sticks can be placed on the ground to make a small fence. Or you can use logs and cut them into different sizes to create a ramp. You can check out your book and see the options displayed when you hold it with your right hand to get an idea of what you can create.
The first step to using this method is to position a stick or log pieces where you plan to build something. Then, while holding another item, interact with the first one and see if a white arrow or dotted line appears. This indicates the direction in which you can place one element relative to the other. Now you have to use your imagination to think about what you can create from there.
The second method is to use the recipes featured in your book when held with your left hand. In this mode you will find many recipes for different types of structures that can be useful. If you want to build one, just select it and choose where it will be built. This places a translucent version of the structure that you can bring the necessary materials to.
This method is less creative and has established steps you need to follow to complete the project. In case you are a solo player, you can ask Kevin to help you build the structure. He will get the materials and bring them to the right place by himself.
We can help you survive on the island with our pages on how to get the shovel, every weapon, keycard, armor and ax location, how to get the rope gun and the rope and where to find water. Don’t forget to learn how to build and craft!
How to craft in Sons of the Forest
To craft most items in Sons of the Forest, you have to use the DIY mat it’s part of your backpack. To access it, you just have to open the inventory and once you face the rather large open backpack on the ground, you will see a central gray area and all your objects around it. This is the DIY mat. Keep in mind that the mat is also used to reload or open items, such as canned food and a flashlight.
Now, there are a lot of things you can craft with this system. The game will tell you the recipe for some after you collect all the necessary items for the first time. To check which recipes an item is part of, simply select it, choose the combine command, then hover over the little cog in the top right of the mat. It will show what you can craft with that specific item as well as the additional materials you need. Once you have them all on the mat, just activate the cog and the item will be ready.
In case you want to try mixing up the items you have and see if you can craft something, you should select a material and see if there is another that is not gray. And since the game won’t tell you what items can be crafted, here’s a list of Sons of the Forest crafting recipes:
