Orig inally developed at the New York Times’ annual game jam, Connections was released in beta in June 2023. It has since become one of the most popular games featured by the NYTimes, second only to Worlde. Although some connections have been made to the BBC’s Only Connect program…

Connections response for August 5th
Without further ado, here is Connections’ response for today:
- Survive – Get by, hack, manage, manage.
- Types of greeting cards – Birthday, Congratulations, Get Well Soon, Thank you.
- Are we clear? – Capisce, Understand, See, Obtain.
- Words after “eye” – Candy, Contact, Shadow, Witness.
Two phrases particularly stood out to me when I read the ones in today’s puzzle. Thank You and Congratulations. Based on these, I started looking for other words that could work as a group around the idea of messages you could send to someone. I finally came up with Birthday and Get Well Soon, although the theme of the group was quite different from what I had originally imagined. Well, a win is a win. The second group I found was the Blue group because of Get It and See. I tend to use these phrases a lot, mainly because I’m never sure if people understand me. It took me a few tries to group the remaining words together, but nothing I couldn’t pull off.
What to play after Connections?
The obvious answer to this question is Wordle, but if you’ve already solved that problem today, the New York Times has other games to offer. As for word-based games, the NYTimes offers Mini Crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Strands, which is still in beta. If you feel like taking a break from words, you can also try Tiles — a pattern-matching game — or Sudoku.
Outside of the NYTimes, there is Semantle, where you have to find the secret word by guessing its meaning. Spelling doesn’t matter in Semantle, instead you have to pay attention to the numerical value of your guesses to plot your way to the answer. However, if you prefer to stick to the Connections format, it’s worth checking out Puzzgrid. There are hundreds of Connections-style puzzles there, but the twist is that you only have three minutes to solve them.
(You can also just watch Only Connect on BBC iPlayer…)
