If you have a few extra minutes today, why not spend them understanding the Connections response for today, September 1st?
If you’ve never played it, Connections challenges you to sort a group of 16 words into four groups where all the words are well… connected. This connection could come from the fact that they share a similar meaning, are part of a place name, objects found in a kitchen, or anything else really!
Although it may seem easy, the connection groups each have a different level of difficulty – yellow being the easiest and purple being the most difficult. For this reason, practice Today’s Login Response This can be quite complicated. You may get one group right away, but another may be a mystery to you. Luckily, we are here to help!
Originally developed at the New York Times’ annual game jam, Connections was released in beta in June 2023. It has since become one of the most popular games featured in the NYTimes, second only to Wordle. Although some connections have been made to the BBC’s Only Connect program…
Hint for today’s Connections answer
Instead of jumping straight to the answer, let’s start with some clues for today’s Connections riddle:
- YELLOW – Delicious!
- Green – Audience.
- Blue – Dark.
- Purple – Something that all these things contain.
- Char belongs to Yellow, Drum belongs to Green, and Jet belongs to Blue.
Remember: yellow is the easiest group to find, followed by green and blue, with purple being the hardest set of words to connect.

Connections response for September 1st
Without further ado, here is Connections’ response for today:
- Cooking in a pan – Brown, char, grill, sear
- Parts of the ear – Anvil, Channel, Drum, Hammer
- Shades of black – Coal, Jet, Raven, Sable
- Where could you find “a driver”? Golf bag, limousine, movie set, toolbox
Today’s connections were quite difficult for me. I got the yellow category right away, but I had to fumble around a bit before I got the green part right (I knew green would be Parts Of The Ear, but I couldn’t remember the name of the last part!). I made another mistake, and finally got the blue and then purple part right with only one try left.
What to play after Connections?
The obvious answer to this question is Wordle, but if you’ve already solved that problem today, the New York Times has other games to offer. As for word-based games, the NYTimes offers Mini Crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Strands, which is still in beta. If you feel like taking a break from words, you can also try Tiles — a pattern-matching game — or Sudoku.

Outside of the NYTimes, there is Semantle, where you have to find the secret word by guessing its meaning. Spelling doesn’t matter in Semantle, instead you have to pay attention to the numerical value of your guesses to plot your way to the answer. If you prefer to stick to the Connections format, however, then it’s worth checking out Puzzgrid. There are hundreds of Connections-style puzzles there, but with only three minutes to solve them.
