According to a report, Discord is facing layoffs, affecting 170 percent of employees and 17 percent of the workforce.
The reports of layoffs in the video game and tech industry continue, and now Discord has joined the inglorious list. According to a report by The Verge, CEO Jason Citron informed the workforce at an employee meeting that 170 employees from various departments will lose their jobs.
Citron argued that the company had grown too quickly and lost efficiency as a result.
An internal memo said: “Our company has changed and grown significantly in recent years. We should all be really proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together to help the millions of people who turn to Discord every day to spend time with their friends.”
“At the same time, we have to face some hard truths. We have grown quickly and expanded our workforce even faster, fivefold since 2020. As a result, we took on more projects and our way of working became less efficient.”
“Today it is becoming increasingly clear to us that we need to sharpen our focus and improve the way we work together to bring greater agility to our organization. This was essentially the catalyst for the decision to reduce our workforce.”
The affected employees should therefore receive support in the form of severance payments and health insurance coverage until the end of 2024.
In 2021, Microsoft expressed interest in a takeover, but Discord ultimately remained independent. The company has received more than $1 billion in funding throughout its history and aims to become profitable in 2024.
