If you are a fan of farm and life simulation, Faraway lands might be just what you are looking for. Developed and published by JandusoftThis video game positions itself as a direct competitor to the big titles of the genre, such as The Valley of the Stars and similar ones.
The video game was released in early access on Steam on July 24.. It is not yet known when it will arrive on other platforms, but it has been announced for all of them. I had the opportunity to try the title thanks to a code for Steam, which allowed me to access all the content available in this version of the game.
First hours in Farlands
Before you start playing, The first thing we need to do is design our character. However, the customization options are quite limited. Both male and female characters have unique models that can only be customized by changing the color of the body and clothing. Once the character is created, a brief cutscene is shown in which a poster is shown promoting the sale of a planet for the symbolic price of one coin.
Upon landing, we will meet a salesman who will do everything possible to convince us that we are about to make an excellent purchase. As the dialogue progresses, it becomes clear that he is a liar, but in the end, we end up accepting the purchase. At this point, we must also choose a name for our character and assign a name to our new planet.
We will explore the house to find the tools that will be essential in our adventure.. When we get out, we will discover a damaged robot that will need to be repaired. To do this, we will have to gather various materials and use an object manufacturing machine. This robot will be the key to being able to travel to other planets.
With the help of the robot, we will be able to travel to Terbin, where we will witness a dispute between Oola and Gorman over ownership of the planet. When talking to Oola, she will ask us to help her defend the place against the evil businessman Gorman.. To do this, we will need to gain the support of a rare race called the Empyreans, who are tasked with protecting many systems and planets. But before they agree to help us, we must fulfill their demands. And so begins our adventure in the Farlands.
Smooth gameplay with good ideas
Most people are familiar with the basic mechanics of a farming simulator. We will use essential tools such as an axe to cut down trees, a sickle to cut down bushes, a pickaxe to extract stone and mine, a hoe to prepare the land and plant seeds, and a watering device that does not require filling with water.
To survive and generate income in the game, buy or acquire seedswhich improves your economy and allows you to obtain useful items during the game. If you like fishing, you will find that it is a simple activity, in which you catch creatures that sell for a good price, although sometimes you also remove trash. The game follows a weekly cycle, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, alien beings visit your planet to offer you their products.
We will have an energy meter that will deplete as we use our tools. If the energy bar is completely empty, our character will faint and the robot will take us back to bed.. To travel to other planets, we will need fuel, which can be obtained through capsules that we can buy or craft. If we do not have capsules, we can also throw away unused materials, which will become fuel.
The game is very smooth when performing an actionwhich sets it apart from other titles in the genre, where movement can feel more rigid. The studio has done a great job in this regard, providing a much smoother and more satisfying experience. In addition, the planets are well designed, with a layout that makes it easy to locate the different stores, preventing the player from feeling disoriented or lost.
Themes to highlight
Farlands stands out for its beautiful and striking pixel art.which really improves the aesthetics of the game and is perfectly complemented by the animations. As for the music, although it fulfills its function of accompaniment during the game, it fails to stand out or immerse the player in the experience; the sounds are pleasant, but they are not memorable.
The game is in Early Access, which is hinted at by starting with a message offering a link to its roadmap. However, this is where I found the main problem: optimization. During my experience, I encountered many bugs that forced me to close the game multiple times, resulting in losing an entire day of game progress, which was quite frustrating. For this reason, I would recommend waiting a bit before playing for a more polished and stable experience.
Promising but lacking in finishing
Faraway lands is a promising farming and life simulator that stands out for its attractive pixel art and smooth gameplay.which differentiates it from other titles of the genre. However, being in early access, it suffers from optimization issues that can affect the player’s experience, such as the presence of bugs that cause loss of progress. Although it has good potential and offers a satisfying experience in several aspects, it is advisable to wait until the game is more polished to fully enjoy everything it has to offer.
