You are hereby invited to a guided tour of Duloc in the kingdom of Far, Far Away, hosted by the developers of PowerWash simulator. Sit back with a cup of warm swamp mud and let us treat you to a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the Duloc level in the new year Shrek special package – Now available!
We worked with Universal Products & Experiences to bring the world of DreamWorks’ Shrek animations to life PowerWash simulatorand transforms iconic locations such as Shrek’s Swamp, Duloc, Hansel’s Honeymoon Hideout, the Fairy Godmother’s Potion Factory and the Dragon’s Lair. FuturLab’s designers: designer Jade Staines and artist Sean Ferretti, who both worked extensively on the Duloc level (one of five in the Shrek Special Pack), are here to tell you all about it, while our concept artist Nick Peacock gives you a more in-depth look Taking a look at early concepts for the Knight character model, you play like in the Shrek Special Pack.
Duloc is a perfect place!
It’s not quite as picture-perfect, Duloc is inspired by the original Shrek film. Hardly recognizable under a layer of dirt, Ferretti explains:
“Players will find house sigils belonging to the Knights and other references to the films scattered around the walls. There are tons of fun details like this throughout the levels because everyone on the art team loves these movies and we had a lot of fun bringing this pack to PowerWash Simulator!”
“It was fun working with the teams at Universal Products & Experiences and DreamWorks Animation to develop ideas and jokes that the Knights had placed around Duloc, including as many film references as possible,” adds Staines.
The graffiti looks especially cool when paired with a new accessibility tool that allows players to change the color of the dirt highlight. This tool will be available with a patch for the main game at the time of release of the Shrek Special Pack.
Shine your shoes, wipe your… visor
Perhaps one of the most iconic moments from the Shrek films (and there is no shortage of choices) is the moment Shrek and Donkey arrive in Duloc and are greeted at the information booth with a catchy tune, or as Ferretti puts it…
“That scene is burned into my brain forever. My colleague Bara (artist) and I must have watched this clip at least 50 times in total when we designed the information stand inspired by the film, but we are proud to have it included!”
Because the information stand is such an icon of the Shrek films, we went to great lengths to make it special – this humble landmark alone contains over 80 dings.
“When I saw the information stand with all the dolls, I knew immediately that I had to make individual objects for each thing! Playing it and hearing them all is sooo satisfying.”
Just like Donkey, we want players to think, “Wow, let’s do that again!”
Get up, washerman!
We love making our special packs even more exciting with unique character models. In the Shrek Special Pack, you can go out as a power-washing knight and defeat the dirt that feels especially at home in Duloc. Peacock explains the process of creating the character model:
“I looked at real armor, films featuring armor (live action and animation), and other artistic representations of armor – useful for seeing how other people solved complex problems and got to the heart of their essence. Once I’ve done that, I like to sketch out ideas and see where my own interpretations take me.”
“I enjoyed developing ideas for the washing elements, such as the water tank on the back or the sword washer. Both tools are used for combat and look fun and toy-like. It brings some humor and fun, which I think enriches the experience of a game like ours. I enjoy working like a child putting their playful ideas on paper.”

“It’s fun to see scenes inspired by a movie I grew up with become levels that you can walk around and explore. Everyone involved with the pack did a great job. I think the players will have a lot of fun cleaning everything.”
