It has been over a year since new generation consoles hit the market. The Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 were launched amid the global chip shortage, obviously making it very difficult to produce the consoles needed to meet the immense demand for both.
A few months ago, we already told you in Phil Spencer’s words that it seems that in 2022 there will always be a shortage of Xbox Series X, and it seems that the demand for the new generation of consoles is no longer there. ‘has no limits at the moment. AMD CEO Lisa Su spoke out on the issue, acknowledging that she was impressed with the high demand for the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
It will take a long time to see the Xbox Series X “for sale”
Su herself comments that in the next 2022 the company will produce more chips than this year, but also that we will likely see even more demand for the new generation of consoles, peaking in 2023:
Well, I think first of all, I think the console business, this cycle of consoles and everything you watch in its entirety, has been amazing. I mean, if you think about the strength of the cycle, now we’re in year two and the demand is so high. I mean we have shipped a lot of product. So the fact that demand remains high speaks volumes about the product capacity that has been captured by Microsoft and Sony during this console cycle. We continue to increase production. We expect 2022 to be another year of strong growth for consoles. If you look at the typical console cycle, the peak year is usually the fourth year. And hence, one would hope that 2023 might be the peak year.
Either way, it’s clear that we’re facing a big time for video consoles, and it makes sense to think we’ll see how demand grows as new exclusive games arrive for them.
