Judgment, is undoubtedly one of the surprises of this year. Not because of the game itself (which too), but because of the possibility of experiencing this fantastic adventure on our Xbox Series consoles. And is that, despite its premiere in December 2018, the adventure of Takuyuki Yagami, had not seen the light of day in the Xbox ecosystem.. Today, three years after its original release, this fantastic adventure returns for the new generation. This remastering is accompanied by some graphics improvements, in addition to reduced loading times and little extras.
Before going into the analysis, we must mention that Judgment are a spin off of the saga Yakuza. While it is true that we will find many changes from the original saga, many more are still present, like its sense of humor, its characteristic open world and the possibility of enjoying numerous mini-games.
Of course, its theme takes a turn and puts us in the shoes of Takuyuki Yagami, a lawyer who after suffering an accident in one of his cases, abandons the law and lives as a private investigator. A job that will make him participate in a series of crimes whose victims will be yakuza with gutted eyes. With this premise, An adventure of crime, intrigue and many investigations begins that will make us stick to the sofa for many hours. Thanks to the friends of Koch Media Europe, we were able to live this fantastic story and bring you our analysis. Don’t miss it!
A facelift
First of all, as we have already mentioned, this version of Judgment, is a revision of the original version released a few years ago. This is why we have to talk about some of the improvements in this new version and why it is only for the new generation. The first thing we see is an improvement in his FPS rate. While the original version was kept at around 30 FPS, here, Judgment
In addition to this improved fluidity, the resolution of this Judment has been increased. Much improve on what has been seen previously, although it is also true that the jump is not dreadful and we start to notice that we are facing a 2018 game in some of its graphical aspects. Some examples are the textures of many buildings or some character models. Despite this, the game continues to look good, although we might have expected a little more since it is exclusive to the new generation of consoles. The sound section, although it doesn’t have any improvements, is still excellent, even more so with its original dubbing. In addition, we are before the first Yakuza It has been translated into Spanish so we can’t ask for much more.
Another point that has improved considerably is the loading times. Thanks to the SSDs of the new consoles, it has been possible to minimize these loading times, being able to enjoy the adventure almost without any interruption. Apart from all these technical improvements the game includes all the DLC of the original version, of course these contents are purely cosmetic, so we will not be able to get too much juice.
A story to tell
Although the game was released three years ago, this is the first time we can enjoy it on Xbox, so now We will do a little overview of the points that make Judgment be a must-have game for many gamers. In the first place, this title seeks to give a twist to what the saga has accustomed us to. Yakuza. He does this by putting us in the shoes of Yagami, who, as we previously commented, is a lawyer who stepped aside after suffering an unexpected outcome in a case.
From the start, the game tries to plunge us into an adventure where there is no shortage of critics of the Japanese legal system, the figure of the lawyer and what is good or bad. The story has a great script that captures the player from their first bars. Thanks to the quality of their dialogues and the mystery behind a series of murders that will undermine the stability of the Yakuza clans.
During the different chapters that divide the adventure, we will experience all kinds of situations. Script twists are not exempt and are essential for following the story with interest. Yet what really brings this adventure to life is the development of its characters. And we will always have the feeling that there is something more to know about each of them.
Yagami’s change
Yes, the game too shows us the change of our protagonist, who ceases to practice the pr ofession of lawyer to become a private investigator who does not hesitate to get involved if the situation requires it. This change of role, gives the game the opportunity to introduce many new mechanics into the series
And, now we’re a detective, so investigating evidence, chasing down suspects, or even using a drone to gain information are some of the possibilities Yagami gives us. The game He takes the opportunity to integrate many features that give it a great variety and make it non-repetitive. While it is true that some of these functions could be better implemented, like following a character without being discovered.
Likewise, Yagami will repeatedly show how what happened in this case continues to haunt him today. Time and again we can see how the guilt haunts him or how he receives criticism from other characters.. This will generate him to immerse himself even more in his misfortunes. In this direction Judgment, It’s not just a story of justice and crime, it’s a story of redemption.
Judgment is still Yakuza
Despite this more than obvious change of theme, Judgment, still retains many keys of the Sega saga. First of all, the fight remains as insane as it has been so far. Our protagonist has two fighting styles perfectly suited to this or that situation.. If we are in a single fight, the Tiger style should be our choice as it gives us more damage to a single enemy. If, on the other hand, we are surrounded by enemies, the Crane style will allow us to unleash a wide range of movements to hit a much larger area. In that sense, we will enjoy the best combat animations in the franchise.
All of this comes with a fairly simple progression system, which will allow us to unlock new abilities for Yagami. Thanks to the skill points that we get in combat or by performing missions or other activities, we will be able to expand our capabilities.
Perhaps one of the most radical changes is that many of the irreverences of Yakuza they are not present. But believe me they are still there, what happens is that a lot of these crazy ideas show up in side missions. What I consider a success, because this type of mission would gradually break the common thread we are working on in the main story. Which is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of this episode.
Kamurocho is alive and well
As we mentioned, the main story is one of the great attractions of Judgment, the same goes for Kamurocho. The mythical district is more alive than ever. Although its space is limited, it is full of life and things to do. From its great mini-games, to all kinds of stores where we will have a good time.
On top of that, Judgment incorporates the buddy system. A new feature that invites us to interact with the different characters of the neighborhood. At first we will limit ourselves to talking with them and getting to know them better, but over time we can ask them for help or from us. Without a doubt, a good idea for the player to enjoy the time and interact in Kamurocho. The amount of possibilities that the environment offers us is spectacular. There is so much to do and enjoy in this neon-filled neighborhood.
Finally, Judgment, it’s still a big title today, just like it was back then. Thanks to the improvements of the new generation, we can enjoy this adventure with even more quality. However, maybe one could ask for more from this review as it doesn’t add any additional content. Even like that, the big victory with this launch is to be able to enjoy this adventure on Xbox, although unfortunately it is only on new generation consoles. The arrival of Judgment, is an example of how times have changed on Xbox. An example of how Microsoft has put the batteries and closed distances from Japan.
With all this, today we have with us one of the riskiest installments of the saga Yakuza. Or what is for many the best of all. If you are thinking of buying this game, we remind you that it has been at a reduced price since its launch. From here we can do nothing but recommend this adventure.
