Ratalaika Games and LLC Shinyuden & SUNSOFT bring us Aero the Acrobat, a platform game set in a circus and released in 1993 for Super Nintendo and Mega Drive.
Businessman Edgar Ektor has sworn to destroy the entertainment world in revenge. His first move was to invade a local circus with his gang of crazy clowns and kidnap all the staff to ruin the show. We will put ourselves in the shoes of Aero, acrobat and star of the circus, who must save Ariel and the rest of her friends and stop Edgar Ektor.
Aero the Acrobat is a 16-bit 2D platform video game in which you will have to overcome a series of levels and final bosses in the different areas of a circus.
Gameplay and difficulty
Being a version from a few years ago, we do not have a minimap that allows us to locate where we are, so we will have to retrace our steps more than once because we missed something important. The truth is that the first game is demanding due to the low endurance of the character, the controls do not help because they are not as precise in a game of these characteristics, so until we master the controls we will die at some point.
We have the possibility to activate a series of tricks that will allow us to improve our experience if we get stuck in certain levels. Having infinite stamina, adding extra lives or even being immortal will make the experience more chaotic and less calculating as initially intended. Being something optional, I consider it grateful because it allows the game to be more acceptable to a greater number of players who may become frustrated with the traditional way of playing.
Graphics and sound
Some of the additions of Aero the Acrobat are, on the one hand, a series of visual filters that allow us to see the game in different color tones, and we can also choose if we want a full screen resolution or, on the contrary, opt for the original resolution that will prevent the screen from being too pixelated. Being 16-bit, it shows that it is a game from several years ago, although part of the circus tent does not have great visual details, as can be seen for example in other landscape areas. As it does not require a high graphic load, we have not had any problems during the game at any time.
The sound section is interesting, mainly in relation to the music since throughout the game we will have circus melodies adapted according to the level and the phase in which we are.
Conclusions
Aero the Acrobat is a 2D platformer that came out a few years ago, and it’s struggling to get traction in a market full of good platformers that are more visually appealing and controllable. While the circus theme may be appealing, it could be well-received if it makes its way to Xbox Game Pass.
