Analysis of Beyond Galaxyland. A beautiful homage to science fiction and classic video games in the RPG genre.
Honestly, I don’t consider myself much of an RPG fan. The inventory management, the huge amount of items and consumables or the complex turn-based combat are things that generally put me off in these games. By knowing Beyond Galaxylandthe title developed by Sam Enright and distributed by Plain labelI noticed that a work of this genre abandoned the medieval fantasy setting to opt for a futuristic cyberpunk style.
As a fan of space science fiction, I really enjoyed films like The fifth element o TitanAE Beyond Galaxyland takes various aspects of these works and synthesizes them into a story of personal discovery, friendship and sacrifice. This is the main trigger that made me decide to analyze this title. And the truth is that I don’t regret embarking on this intergalactic journey.

Beyond Galaxyland tells us the story of Douga simple teenager returning from a costume party with a friend. Doug arrives at his parents’ house on a seemingly normal night, but his entire life is about to change. When she goes looking for her runaway pet again, her friend has disappeared. As if that wasn’t enough, a strange being tries to attack him. On the run, our protagonist finds his furry companion as well as his a strange portalwhich brings you to Galactic Country.
This place is a planetary system created by the organization DreamCore
Beyond Galaxyland pays homage to some sci-fi films from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. On a narrative level, it is surprising by its ability to mix absurdist humor with more serious themes. We will find a plot that, although interesting at first, ends up falling into the classic RPG formula where we start as no one and end up fighting against incredibly powerful forces. However, it is worth seeing how the game builds relationships between characters within a captivating story.
Explore the galaxy with a shooter hamster
The title of Sam Enright will take us from one location to another across the galaxy, discovering new and diverse characters, exploring new planets and learning the true intentions of DreamCorehe Malefactor o The end. We will always have a main mission that follows the main plot of the adventure. But by talking to certain NPCs, you can obtain secondary missions whose reward for completing them will be items, consumables or gold.
At a playable level, Beyond Galaxyland uses a turn-based combat system typical of classic RPGs. However, they add some variations which makes it more tactical and strategic. Things like Turn Points and the AP bar.
Turn Points are the number of times our character can attack.. Every hit we hit will increase our health bar. AP (skill points)just like when we make perfect blocks. But if we fail, it will be reduced by 2 points. We will also have the option to end our turn or stop attacking so that the remaining Turn Points accumulate on the bar. When we have enough HP, we can perform powerful offensive moves and skills that benefit us during combat.
Get them all!
Another curious mechanism offered by the game is the catches. Like in Pokémon, you can capture most enemies and even bosses (using PH) to summon them into battle. We will have the possibility of photograph them before they fight to see their lives in battle and, the less they have, the easier they will be to catch. These summons can attack for us, heal us, buff us, or use status abilities. Each will have one or two skills (normally one unlockable by leveling it up) that we can perform using our character’s IP (summon points).
It must be taken into account that The creatures we summon and fight against will have their own classes or types.. Discovering their strengths and weaknesses will be necessary to win in combat and not waste IP. In addition, each character can equip a maximum of 4 monsters/summons, so they must be well distributed.
Pixelated universe
Really, What is most striking about Beyond Galaxyland, as well as its story, is its incredible pixel art section.. A style that aims to emulate 80s classicswith chromatic aberration, particle effects or with camera movements. At close range, characters are less defined and have fewer pixels. But Backgrounds, large enemies, and other larger elements have a truly astonishing level of detail.
And speaking of money, the game generates a sensation of depth with two planes between which, sometimes, we can alternate
Concerning the sound section, we will find disco style songs with electronic sounds and synthesizers. This retro-futuristic touch fits perfectly with the atmosphere and general style of the game. The musical variety is wide and all the melodies will have their own style depending on the planet or moment in which we find ourselves. Note that the sound effects of weapons, vehicles and environments also serve to immerse us in this galactic adventure.
Finally, it is worth emphasizing the fantastic Spanish translation that Beyond Galaxyland has. Although there is no voice acting, the game has a perfect localization in Spanish this gives a lot of personality to each character. I already assure you that the jokes and jokes typical of MartyBot’s particular irony will make you laugh from time to time (or at least a smile). Also, from time to time, The dialogues include small expressions typical of our countrywhich demonstrates the naturalness and excellent work of the localization team.
Eventually
Beyond Galaxyland is one of those titles that you find by chance and which end up surprising you with its charm and good work.. An RPG, perhaps too classic, that doesn’t delve much into its combat system, but offers everything every science fiction fan is looking for: spaceships, robots, fighting aliens and exploring unknown planets. Its story may be somewhat typical, but it’s engaging enough to keep you paying attention for the 15 or so hours that the main adventure lasts.
It is clear that Beyond Galaxyland isn’t perfect, but Sam Enright’s work deserves recognition for its superb finish.
