I have to admit that when we talk about a game published by Digital feedback, this title always catches my attention from its first images. Known to many as “the publisher that never fails,” Devolver Digital This is generally a guarantee of quality. Join me in this analysis of Children of the sun to see if, once again, we are right.
let’s contextualize this Children of the sun is the result of work of a single creativeRené Rother, and constitutes the culmination of a development process which lasted for many years and which has finally seen the light of the past. April 9. For now available only on PCbut we wouldn’t be surprised to see it on Xbox consoles sooner rather than later.
A story of revenge
The premise of the game, at the level of history, it’s very simple: we will be THE GIRL and we will have to lead a battle against THE SECT. It will be necessary to kill the members of said sect to ultimately track down THE LEADER. We are thus confronted with a story of revenge and rage directed towards a clear objective. We will discover the reason for this desire to murder and the circumstances surrounding it, very succinctly, in brief sequences between mission and mission. In general and except the endthe story This is usually something already seen in these types of revenge stories. and is not distinguished by its development. Of course, the scenes and the way they are told seemed very accurate to me and its aesthetic was very successful.
Enter fully in the playableas soon as you’ve seen a trailer or tried its demo (which is still available), you’ll know that We will have to take a sniper rifle and we will have to, with a single bullet, eliminate all the targets on the stage. To achieve this, you must first position yourself at the edge of the stage, be able to go to the right or left as you wish (and always within limits) to position yourself as you see fit. Once settled, we will fire the single bullet, which can be redirected every time we kill an enemy. In other words, I shoot, I kill an enemy and time stops so that I can give the same bullet another trajectory to kill another enemy.
Analysis of Children of the Sun: Little by little, things get complicated…
Missing the shot or running out of objectives will cause us to lose and we will have to try again from the beginning. For this reason, and despite seeing it as if it were a shooting game, It’s a title that will make you think more than you think.
We can mark enemies and, even if you don’t, as you kill them they will be marked automatically. We will have a counter on the screen with the number of enemies to defeat on the level and we will have to eliminate them all to move on to the next one.
After a little tutorial and our first very simple scenarios, Things will gradually become more complicated and add new mechanics that will put another spin on the already complex gameplay.. For example, we will have enemies with armor that will need to be eliminated at long range so that the bullet “gains strength”. And also in the final stages enemies with an aura that will repel our ball.
In order to overcome these new difficulties, the game will introduce new abilities such as, thanks to a meter filled with deaths in key points of an enemy’s body, being able to completely rotate the ball to redirect it in the opposite direction, giving more amplitude around the camera.
A well-adjusted difficulty curve
The difficulty curve will increase and we will end up having to rack our brains a lot in the final stages, which, with a total of 26 scenarios, enough for around 5 hours of gameplay, depending on your abilities. In addition, to avoid falling into repetition, the game introduces a few “different” levels in which you will also have to be precise, but they will be considered as interludes between more advanced phases.
In short, and to summarize the gameplay, I must say that What starts as something simple becomes complicated to such a level that it will require effort on the part of the player.who will be rewarded by the realization of this perfect sequence of movements which, perfectly executed as if it were a ballet, will end in a perfectly orchestrated orgy of destruction.
While it would have been nice to continue adding new mechanics or enemies, the condensed nature of the work and the high replayability of the same (in each scenario we will get a score depending on certain aspects such as time spent, deaths in the head, etc.) make Children of the sun a suitable proposition for those who like convoluted puzzles.
Technical section
Regarding the technique, the game works perfectly on PC and, due to its low requirements, it should fit perfectly with almost all current PCs. In addition, we were able to test it in Steam bridge and, in addition to executing natively without requiring additional settings, performance and frame rate were very satisfactory. Of course, if we want to limit the TDP to, for example, 8, the frame rate will suffer somewhat.
Regarding audiovisual…
On the visual aspect, the style used by the author borders on raw and almost retro. We liked his dark color palette and the way he uses them to give visual importance in the scenarios to what is required, and we found it to be very consistent with the story he wants to tell us. There will be no dialogues or voices, but what happens on the screen will be perfectly understood and, with the exception of the tutorials, the game leaves you free to solve its phases as you wish.
Analysis of Children of the Sun: conclusions
Complete, Children of the sun are another success in the already long list of Devolver Digital successes and a game to keep in mind if you like puzzles and thinking before you act. With high replayability, The game goes “in crescendo” and ends in a masterful way, both in terms of gameplay and in terms of story.. Its graphics section and the possibility of “snacking” with your friends thanks to its rating system add additional reasons why we cannot stop recommending it to you.
