Kablate brings us a 2018 port created by Drygin Studios. Bio Inc Redemption is a medical strategy game. He offers us to be the solution by managing the healing of the patient or the problem, by attacking his defenses.
Bio Inc. Redemption drinks a lot of Plague Inc. It’s a disease simulator, but this time it only attacks one person and their different systems (cardiac, neurological, renal…) Thanks to skill points The player will activate different schemes to save the patient’s life or complicate matters until his fateful end.
Between life and death, but not in the way you think.
Bio Inc Redemption offers 2 “story” modes: Life mode and Death mode. This is what each name indicates. Both modes play the same with minor differences. I cite history because there is none. These are independent cases which increase the difficulty proposition or vary certain mechanics. There is no argument that unites each phase.
In Life Mode, we are introduced to a patient with their symptoms. From them we have to do tests, analyze the results and administer treatment. All this has a cost, a few points which are obtained through a mini-game of hunting for red and white blood cells and viruses present in the patient’s body while traveling through the different systems. This system of receiving points is so random and so trivial that it takes you out of mood of the game. Your lung is about to collapse but I need to collect leukocytes to heal it. This is part of the strategy, but not part of the simulation.
The mode of death is similar, although less complicated since the task is simply to create the diseases, with the diagnosis and subsequent treatment part eliminated. Using the same point system, we create the perfect storm. Of course, the medical team also treats the patient. and they can cut off the path taken to kill the person.
Lots of possibilities, lots of depth.
Once immersed in the game, you realize the level of depth that each game can acquire. Be able to face the goal from different points, A very wide tree of possibilities opens up. Not only do we play with different human systems and their illnesses, but we can also activate Power Ups.
There are a whole range of patient habits that we can also spend points on. You can improve their eating habits, emotional stability or sleeping habits to improve their health or make them obese and smoke to deteriorate it. Likewise, there is another tree to improve/worse the situation in case of emergency. Here I must also highlight the few points that are covered and the highly strategic component that this implies.
This whole medical world of possibilities creates a very wide playing space. The sex of the patient with inherent gender issues can also be changed. All this information is analyzed and interacts perfectly by artificial intelligence. With all of this, each phase can vary in multiple ways and is very replayable. Added to this is the possibility of choosing the difficulty level and different rewards which are exchanged for experience points before each game.
A poorly designed port.
Bio Inc. Redemption is a game released on PC in 2018. and played with the idea of diseases. Presumably, the port to consoles should not have waited so long. But I guess due to some events that happened in 2020, these types of games preferred to move to a lower profile.
I return to Plague Inc to illustrate what I mean. I have this game on mobile/tablet and it is very optimized for that system. Access to the menus is easy and the interaction is very intuitive. Bio Inc Redemption has the same game system and comes from PC. Once again, I find the same simplicity from the touch screen to the mouse. With a pointer you can access everything and then there are the keyboard shortcuts for the more expert.
The transition to the Xbox controller isn’t as natural as you might imagine.
The same thing happens with the right stick and the D-pad, depending on the menu it is managed with one or the other. This is a rather complex system for what is ultimately point-and-click. In fact, you can see that it’s coming from the mouse because the highlighting of the selected icons is very thin and it’s hard to see where you’re moving. With a slider it doesn’t matter, but with the controller it’s confusing.
Conclusions.
Bio Inc Redemption is a good strategy game. Very replayable and with a depth that must be studied to get the most out of it. The “normal” difficulty is quite high, I recommend starting easy mode to gain knowledge. The degree of learning is enjoyable and has the necessary elements to want to improve in the game.
Even so, the control is quite confusing and complex for what it could have been. It seems like little attention was paid to the move to consoles and the rest of the game suffers as a result.
