Released February 8 on consoles and PC, The Inquisitorr is a game developed by the Polish studio Dust. Although its members have worked on other projects, this is their first video game under this studio and, with the help of Calypsothey just changed this adventure game and mixture of other genres which, if you join me in this analysis, I will talk to you about in this analysis.
I admit that I was quite curious when watching the various promotional trailers and that the principle of the game was curious to say the least. The Inquisitor puts us in the shoes of the inquisitor Mordimer Madderdin and It is set in an alternate reality regarding religion.. In fact, the story and setting are based on Jacek Piekara’s fantasy novel saga, in which, according to her, Jesus did not die on the cross and he came down to administer justice with excessive fury towards all the infidels. Centuries after this event, there are still some in the world fervent inquisitors who impose the faith in a savage way.
About the story…
And we will be one of them. Our mission leads us to clarify some questions related to rumors about the appearance of a vampire in the town of Königstein. Shortly after our arrival we will begin to see how strange events are occurring in the city and our mission will be to act as an investigator and see how the facts in which power, religion, witchcraft are mixed are revealed and more.
At the level of historyI think that’s it the strong point of the game. The plot is followed with interest and, although we will always know what to do, you will always want to know more about what is happening. Without wanting to enter the swampy terrain of spoilers, we can only say that in addition to several endings, the game has prepared some plot twists which, without being spectacular, make you want to continue knowing how the plot unfolds.
About its gameplay…
In terms of gameplay, the game It could be quite similar to the first The Witcher, for character movement and for combat. With a third-person view, we will walk through the streets of the city and its surroundings to interact with other characters through dialogues.
But if words don’t solve the problem, guns will. He fight is something simple and we will have the classic layout of a third-person action game: strong attack, weak attack, dodge and guard. I found it superficial and, in fact, with just one weak attack repeated quickly, it served to eliminate almost all opponents. There are no skills or weapons your choice, just the same sword and the same movements.
Your exploration and puzzles
Fortunately, we won’t spend a lot of time fighting, but rather instead we will travel the map from point A to point B in order to advance in the story. Precisely to advance, the protagonist will be able to pray and this will reveal the direction where we must go, further simplifying the task and canceling any sense of exploration. Sure, you can go wherever you want, but the only reward will be collectibles in the form of stories scattered across the world.
In addition to talking to the different characters with dialogues in which we will have different response options, we will have a section (although rare) of puzzles, in which by turning a mechanism and with the classic mechanics already seen in other games, we will have to find the key to this puzzle to be able to advance in the story. Sayings riddles They are simple but well integrated into the story. They will also be logic
Listening Events and Quick Time
Another constant throughout the game is the QTE (Quick Time Events) Sections. On several occasions we will have to be attentive and press the buttons that the game shows us on the screen. We have user-friendly response windows and they are not at all complex. Personally, I don’t feel uncomfortable with these mechanics, but I can understand that there are people who consider them backwards.
In addition, there will also be sections in which we will have to sit on a bench and listen to other people’s conversations. In short, mechanics which, although simple, add a little variety to an already simple gameplay.
In The Inquisitor we also have stealth
In addition to the mechanisms mentioned above, our Inquisitorfaced with some mystery that resists us, will travel to the “Other World”a place where our alter ego will travel in a sort of astral journey and where we will have to collect fragments of memories/scenes experienced by the characters.
In this “Other World”, we will start from a sort of base and branch out towards several scenarios in which we will have to recover fragments. But we will have enemies to avoid and the game will recommend us to use stealth. Each enemy will have a cone of vision which, when they see us, will fill a meter. If it fills up, we will have no choice but to fight. We will also have a sort of “shadow” or “focus” above what we need to avoid.
I must say that, despite a certain variety to the overall proposition of the game and add new mechanics, over the hours and in the 7 occasions when we will have to go thereit ends up being done something repetitive and its stealth mechanics are somewhat simple.
Audiovisual and Performance
Concerning the audiovisual aspect, I think that this is undoubtedly its worst aspect. The game does not seem “worthy” to be released in this generation and could have perfectly been placed a few generations ago. We understand how difficult it is to create a video game and all the work associated with it, but details like, for example, when drinking a glass/bottle, there is a large space between the glass and the mouth and that the liquid cannot be seen, are details that denote this inexperience on the part of the studio.
Furthermore, the faces require a lot more work and the expressions and movements leave much to be desired. On the contrary, everything related to the recreation of the city and even the interiors seemed very superior to us.
In terms of performance, the game has some frame drops and it seems like it lacks polish in this aspect as well. Of course, I didn’t experience any bugs during the 10 hours that the game lasted.. The version played on Xbox Series
The Inquisitor: Conclusions
Eventually, The Inquisitor we loved it for its story and plot but, in certain aspects, Looks like a game from many years ago in which several mechanics mix to bring a certain variety to the whole. None of these mechanics are poorly executed but, by the way, they don’t shine or innovate either. Recommended if you are looking for an interesting story with a curious narrative basis and a dark setting.
Pro.
- The story and its narrative
- Leisure activities in the city and surrounding areas
Contra.
- Simple and old mechanics
- Lack of finish in the graphics section
