Zapling Bygone is a pixelart metroidvania with an intriguing and mostly chilling plot.
Zapling Past will be released on consoles on March 9th and we had the opportunity to break it down for all of you on Xbox Community. The title is the first game from the studio 9FingerGames and created this classic metroidvania with style pixel art. The game puts us in the shoes of a hive mind whose planet is devastated by a parasite that only seeks destruction out of greed.
Skulls and Skeletons.
This hive mind call Zappling will wander the galaxy in search of a new home. During their pilgrimage, they will find hundreds of planets already devastated by the parasite, where only wastelands full of corpses remain. However, they will eventually find a small, hidden, nameless planet, where there are still survivors and the parasite isn’t done with everything. Our protagonist, the hive mind, will drop a small fragment of itself onto the planet to investigate it
As a small fragment of this organism that we are, we don’t have legs or the ability to do many things. We are a regular mucus Green who crawls without any other pretext. But suddenly we’ll come across an old man skull by a body abandoned, which we will use as a mask… and that when we equip them, it will give us the first useful abilities, tentacles that will allow us to walk and explore the world in which Zapling Bygone throws us.
Metroidvania on all four sides.
as well metroidvania the map of Zapling Past it’s a labyrinth of tunnels, platforms, castles and areas where enemies will abound. We will have to explore different areas, jumping from here to there to discover shortcuts and unravel the history of each place. At this stage the game is very original, each area has a final boss, who once defeated will throw his skull on the ground and that we can equip. Each skull decade final boss will grant us SKILLS well differentiated. It will therefore be necessary to choose well, which one to equip according to the level in which one is.
Originality and old school.
To change of skull This can be done at specific points on the map which are a checkpoint. These will be activated by filling them with the mucus that we collect by killing enemies. This mucus also helps us to heal ourselves at certain points in the game. In addition to the different skulls that the final bosses drop, if we explore
But the map not only hides skulls and enemies, as we progress we will discover the secrets that guard the different parts of this planet. These secrets we will collect as one cut which will form a comic of each area and which will shed light on what happened to this society in the past splendidbut decline absolute right now.

It’s nice when you come across a title like Zapling Past. They basically focused their efforts creating the most comforting user experience possible away from frustrations and anger. And what do I mean by all that? Well, Zapling Bygone despite being pixel art and a studio independent which publishes its first game, it is a title which pleases to play. It moves at 60fps smoothly Xbox Series
CONCLUSION.
Zapling Past is the classic metroidvania of all the life with an original plot and a story and a way of telling it that grabs you. Its pixel art style, level and enemy design make the game completely round and to which a bit more can be requested.
9FingerGames They were clear on what they wanted when they created Zappling Bygone, they knew where to go and they achieved it. It’s not the best metroidvania ever, nor the best graphically, but this study left the skull presenting us with a product that will make ours burst with joy at every playthrough.
