There was also a crunch phase during the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, as the studio admitted.
Larian Studios has admitted that the team had a small crunch period to complete the role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3.
According to Games Radar, Swen Vincke said at the Digital Dragons Conference that some overtime is always necessary, but in the case of Baldur’s Gate 3 there were fewer than in previous games.
Vincke, when asked whether there was a lot of overtime: “Certainly less than in the past. It would be a lie to say that we didn’t do that. Things happened that we didn’t foresee.”
It doesn’t seem to have been quite that bad. There was a lot to do, but not an excessive amount. Only very rarely did people work on weekends and they almost always went home at 8 p.m.
Vincke said: “I think, to be honest, you always have a bit of work to do when you’re trying to get something done, especially when there’s so much complexity that needs to be brought together.”
In the rightly criticized crunch phases, a lot is demanded of the developers if a game wants to meet its release date. Countless overtime hours over weeks and months have already been required for games such as Grand Theft Auto V or Cyberpunk 2077.
