A modern setting has now been officially confirmed for the new Battlefield game.
Vince Zampella of Respawn Entertainment officially announced in an interview with IGN that the new Battlefield will take place in a modern setting. They also want to go back to the roots and the characteristics that made the Battlefield series strong.
There will be no 128-player matches or specialists like in Battlefield 2042. Instead, there will be a return to traditional 64-player battles and the familiar class system.
Speaking about the decision to return to the modern era, Zampella says, “I mean, if you look back at the peak or the high point of Battlefield, it was the Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era, where everything was modern.”
“I think we need to go back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well and then we’ll see where it goes. But I think for me the peak of the Battlefield era is the days of Battlefield 3 and 4. I think it’s nostalgic for the players, for me, even for the teams. That’s kind of the heyday… although I would also say 1942.”

“So we’re designing something that’s more in line with previous Battlefields. I’d rather have nice, dense, really beautiful, well-designed locations. Some of them are really good. I can’t wait for you to see some of them.”
“The Specialist system is not coming back,” he added. “Classes are kind of the heart of Battlefield, and we’re going back to them.”
