As we mentioned in Vol.1 of this article, Ancient Scrolls is a saga that dates back to the early days of Bethesda. More precisely in 1994, when it was launched The Elder Scrolls: Arena. With the experience of other important projects behind him, the study carried out what unknowingly would become one of its main features.
This original role-playing title took us to an open world never seen before. With a mission to free the Emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim VII, we had to put the pieces of the Staff of Chaos together and defeat the evil Jagarn.
Since then, the saga has continued to offer a profound proposal in terms of freedom and stories. If already in Arena we could interact with a multitude of NPCs or have our own profession, these options would continue to develop in future installments.
Daggerfall, a plus and a better
Before Bethesda Softworks handed over development to Bethesda Game Studios, they would make the successful second installment of Ancient Scrolls in 1996, this time titled daggerfall. In this case, we would visit high rock by order of the emperor.
Once there, we would be introduced to the Bretones and his high gifts for magic. One of the main revolutions of this title was the imposing size of the cartography. More … than 160,000 square kilometers explorablequickly became one of the biggest open worlds in the history of the industry.
To all this we must add the large number of characters with whom we were able to interact, which has increased considerably compared to its first opus. It was more and more excellently executed, there were more dungeons, more enemies, and even more alternate endings. This time he even had 6 different endings based on player decisions.
Despite the problems with which it had the launch, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall managed to expand the universe of Tamriel to another level. Many launch bugs have been fixed, while others persisted at the time of this writing, but the success of daggerfall He will forever remain in the video game industry.
Morrowind, the game that changed everything in the hit Bethesda saga
With the brand well established, the new Bethesda Game Studios division would be in charge of making the new Ancient Scrolls. With new technologies, we could predict something rather “big”, but Morrowwind It was all of that and more. This time it would not only reach its original PC audience, but would have a version suitable for the original Xbox. The saga officially lands on home consoles at the end of 2002.
The success was such that it had two extensions after its launch; Moon of blood Yes Court. Additionally, these would be added with the video game in its “Game of the Year” version later. Acclaimed by the public and the critics, Morrowwind offered a much higher level of detail than seen in the genre, with a much more advanced character editorthe guilds the player could participate in, or the revolutionary change of perspective in third person. Decidedly, this new stage of the saga will lay the foundations for what will come later.
Improvements to the combat system, the abilities and editing of our character, and the freedom of its world have made possible the evolutions seen in the new deliveries.
Consolidation
The formula “do what you want” would remain in force in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivionwith a more than remarkable evolution, which returned to Xbox, this time to the second generation with 360. This possibility of playing on console would make the name of the saga even more popular, which was officially consolidated in the industry and in the kind of role.
In keeping with tradition, Bethesda has continued to support the game with new expansions, and quivering islands it would be the first. In 2007, the expansion Knights of the Nine, in what would be a pack that would also reach the PS3 version. On a brand new map, players would explore the vast lands of Cyrodiillocated southwest of Morrowind.
With OversightBethesda chose to introduce the so-called automatic level system, causing all enemies and the collection of objects to change according to the level of our character. The same time, the progression system followed the same line as Morrowwind, while the choice of our “prota” remains the same as the previous title. With up to ten different races, Oversight represented a further development that would further refine the formula of Ancient Scrollsuntil finally he comes Skyrim.
Skyrim; Bethesda’s Last Giant Is Still More Alive Than Ever
Skyrim would give life to the fifth and final installment of Ancient Scrolls. We all remember “Hey you, you’re finally awake”, a mythical scene that will be remembered forever, thanks in part to the power of memes. This time, TES V would take us to the field of the province of Skyrimwhere the player should navigate the civil war two hundred years after what happened in Oversight.
And what can we say since we don’t know Skyrim… Its legend is more alive than ever, with a community that continues to get lost in its settlements, dungeons and vast fields full of danger. The battles continue to be more epic than ever, with dragons as the main protagonist beasts. Packed by Bethesda with so many expansions, it single-handedly became the YOUR bestseller of the saga. Much of the blame is also on her online testwith a multitude of constant content, and which invites us to continue living incredible adventures in Tamriel.
The Elder Scrolls VI is already on its way, but we hope that with this humble journey through the saga, the wait has been made more enjoyable for you. We can’t wait to put our teeth into it. Oh! and don’t miss the third and final part of this article, coming soon to the Xbox area.
