Biomutant, has been perhaps one of the most anticipated games of this year. The videos shown of the game prepared us to immerse ourselves in a fantastic post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant animals. All of this was accompanied by a fantastic artistic section which left us with some great scenes. However, the arrival of the game of THQ Nordic, This was not at all planned. The reception of critics was rather harsh and sometimes cruel.
It is for this reason that during this analysis, we have tried to put aside the hype the company has given us and focus on what it really is. Biomutant. And that’s it, We can not forget that we are facing a double A game and that it was developed by a team of 20 people. Quite limited numbers and that, as is evident, in most cases will be passed on to the product. Having said that, let’s start with our analysis.
The world of Biomutant
First of all, we need to introduce ourselves to what the world of Biomutant. Which has an interesting story, at least at first. Bioumtant, places us in a world where pollution and radiation have wiped out humanity and now reigns a highly vitaminized local fauna that has been the victim of all kinds of mutations. However, it is not without problems either.
The great tree of life, which is a fundamental pillar in this world, is threatened. A threat led by four creatures called World Eater. All of this is happening as different animal tribes fight each other in seemingly endless wars.. At this point we could say that the goal of the game is to protect the Tree of Life and save the world, but that doesn’t have to be the case. The game has a system of good and bad, which will allow us to choose an end to our adventure.
Telling a disaster
Having said that, you might be thinking that the premise of Biomutant, in fact, I don’t think the story itself is a problem. However, the way the story is told is an issue, it is more likely the biggest mistake in the game.. The story comes to us through a narrator who will tell us everything that is happening around us, including the conversations we have with the other characters in the game. Likewise, it generates that the characters are much flatter, because we will hear the same voice for each of them.
Likewise, it causes all conversations to be in a passive voice, which at first makes it more uncomfortable to read. However, the worst comes when we listen to the narrator, who, although dubbed in Spanish, has a very monotonous and flat tone. A real nonsense which it is impossible to get rid of and which is extremely tedious. The only thing I can be grateful for is that we have the opportunity to reduce your interventions outside of the dialogues. This avoids moments as exasperating as being in the middle of a fight and listening; “This is the first momentTo a narrator who seems to have just woken up.
In addition to the above, the game adds a dialogue system which usually gives us a choice of three different options. Unfortunately, the game is so poorly written that often these options have little or nothing to do with what is happening on the stage. On top of that, dialogue options tend to be constantly repeated, so variety is almost non-existent.
Biomutant redeems itself through its art
Leaving aside the bad taste in the mouth that the structure of the story of Biomutant, we must speak of one of its great virtues. The artistic design of the game is a true marvel, and here we can say that what we saw in the trailers does the game justice.. Since we went to the outside world, the game looks great, showing us environments full of light and color.
Following this line, the different biomes through which we will have to enter continue to keep the bar high enough, leaving us with some very striking scenes that will undoubtedly encourage us to continue playing. Most of the game’s mapping has been created with great care and we will be able to find a lot of detail in its environments. Likewise, the character designs are quite good, showing a good variety of enemies and blending in perfectly with the world that this title offers us.
It is also true that the game has obvious graphical deficiencies in the interiors and in some animations. Especially those that have to do with the memories of our character, they will leave us with a rather bitter taste. Although realistic, the vast majority of the game takes place in open environments so that’s not too much of a problem.
Unfortunately, the sound section is far behind the technical section. Not only for the same dub we mentioned above, but for the soundtrack, which it has very few clues since the narrator’s appearances have been prioritized.
An agile but too simple fight
In the adventure presented to us by this launch, combat is postulated as one of its strengths. In this direction, We find a very fast fight which allows us to insert between a wide variety of actions. From typical melee combat, to shooting and using all kinds of skills. Thanks to this, it is quite cool and entertaining. It’s a shame that the combos we have are so extremely straightforward, as that would have meant a jump in quality in every rule. Even so, the large number of skills and weapons is a point to consider.
The skills we have are undoubtedly one of the strengths of this game. We have psychic or biological abilities, each of them is different from the previous one and will require some resources or others to be unlocked. This is why the exploration of cartography is gaining a point of interest.
Despite this, the variety of enemies, although plentiful, is monotonous. Indeed, even with different designs for creatures, their sets of movements are identical. What generates that the fights do not have a great variety of situations. However, there are some creatures that pleasantly surprised us and gave us a pretty interesting fight.
A mishmash of things
On another side, Biomutant, has a number of options which can be overwhelming at first. Not only because of the menus which are a bit chaotic at first, but because of the amount of mechanics that have been tried to include in the game. One of those mechanics that caught my attention the most is the ” to have an alignment, that is, to be able to be good or bad. A good idea, but one which has a very sloppy execution, mainly due to the development of its dialogue. The game also offers us a faction war, where we can position ourselves with a tribe and conquer other territories. However, these missions are mostly clones.
As an accompaniment to the above, we have a fairly complex crafting system, a system for upgrading materials, mounts, side missions … etc. Anyway, we have a lot to do, and I think that’s where the problem lies Biomutant. Being such a small team, the game tried to cover too much, which resulted in us having all of these things to do, but for the most part they contribute much less to the gameplay of this title than expected..
Also, these many situations are so generic, that I could not ask myself if it was really necessary to include it in Biomutant. And that’s it, A game that has a world as original as the one developed by the Experience 101 team, with much less it would have been a much more satisfying experience.. In short, I must say that BiomutantIt is not the game most gamers expected, but it is still a game that is entertaining and will leave you with spectacular images on more than one occasion. However, it does carry some significant issues such as its sound section and some issues related to its playability. However, I don’t think we are facing a catastrophe. If you liked this analysis, don’t forget that you have a lot more here.
