Manufacturing Cosmically top secret It was an amazing journey that started with a pinch of curiosity. My father was part of the Danish Secret Service during the Cold War and one day he accidentally told me that he was working on DASK, the first computer in Denmark. I was seriously fascinated: “What did he calculate on this machine?” But he refused to tell me because of his lifelong promise of confidentiality. In a rather dramatic way, he said I could either “All or nothing!” and i decided it will be everything!
I wanted to turn this investigation into a game. At first I didn’t know what kind of game it was, but only knew that my father had to say, “No! I can’t answer you! “I started playing with ideas, drawing characters and objects, following my father and recording him.
The game took shape and people joined the production. I called the secret service and asked for access to my parents’ files. They were surprised but agreed to discuss this with the “organization”. My parents were invited to a briefing about what they could and could not talk about. Then it got pretty uncomfortable – they asked: “Well, Trine, go ahead and ask us: What do you really want to know?” and I said, “I don’t know what it is, I don’t know and I want to know.”
This became an important narrative aspect of for me Cosmically top secret::
- How do secrets affect our lives?
- How can we know more when we don’t know what we don’t know?
- And do we have to know everything about each other?
These are the questions that players will hopefully ask themselves during the game.
The art style of Cosmically top secret came up intuitively – I hurriedly printed a photo of my dad, cut it out, and drew some cartoony legs. Because of the fisheye angle in the photo, he had huge hands and arms. Two fingers were joined together, like his real fingers after an accident while throwing hand grenades.
For me it was important to keep this kind of “residue” away from reality and to portray him as a real person with everything that has to do with defects and scratches. Those were the first signs that he wouldn’t stay with me forever. He became so very one characterthat it was impossible to change and in some ways its design defined the style of the rest of the universe. The crumbling of the paper, the falling apart of the characters, the old documents with confidential information, etc., everything seemed to fit into this structure. Those big hands were great fun for the animators too.
During the seven years of production, we researched and collected tons of old photos, videos, interviews, documents and objects – and of course also recorded many new ones. The hybrid visual identity that we have come to terms with enabled us to present all of this true content and sometimes let players interact with it directly.
Sum up, Cosmically top secret is an autobiographical Cold War adventure game that I grew up in and that my parents protected me from when they secretly worked for the secret service. It’s also a story of broken legs, unspoken things, and ups and downs of feelings. Everyone may treat it differently, but personally I ultimately think that we should accept and love each other and one another despite our mistakes. What started as a personal project rolled into a paper ball that kept getting bigger, won some awards along the way, inspired the creation of a life-size event at the Museum of the Cold War in Denmark, and eventually made its way to Xbox One. where it starts on May 21st! You can pre-order it now with a 10% discount.
I can’t wait to share my amazing journey with you in the game as Agent T!
