Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of Elden Ring, explains in an interview why there are no rings in the game and why he doesn’t play it.
Creator and FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki gave EDGE magazine in print issue 367 an interview about the upcoming Elden Ring. In it he commented on the rings, which, like in the Dark Souls series, are not available as equipment in this game.
“There are several reasons for this decision. The first reason is that in our previous games – especially Dark Souls – we spent a lot of time looking at rings as a piece of equipment, and this time talismans gave us the opportunity to express those ideas in a different way and with a greater variety of designs to tackle. And the second reason is that rings in this game naturally exist as physical “finger rings”, but more as unique items that are tied into the story and unique character events. So we wanted them to occupy a special position in the world of Elden Ring and also to be different from the talismans in terms of design. “
Although Hidetaka Miyazaki has said in the past that Elden Ring is exactly his ideal game, he will not play it himself because he has worked on it for too long and so the feeling of the new might not arise.
“You know, I’m probably not going to play Elden Ring because it’s a game I made myself. This is my personal policy, so to speak. You wouldn’t know about the unknowns a new player will experience. Like I said, it wouldn’t feel like a game. But if I did it would be very close to the ideal game I would want. My motto is not, “This is the kind of open world game I want to make; it’s just about the open world enriching this ideal experience that I’m trying to achieve. To take a very simple example, if I were to explore this world, I would want a map – a real map. Or, if I see something over there, I want to go there and explore it. And I would want to fight a dragon in an epic arena. Such things. These are very simple things, but Elden Ring enables me to achieve many of these things and create something that is very close to my ideal game. “
In his opinion, players who like to explore open worlds will find the perfect playground because Elden Ring is very varied.
“We wanted to create a world in which the joy of exploring the unknown is paramount. So we wanted to create lots of enticing things for the budding adventurer. And we wanted to prepare a lot of these mysterious situations that players read about or hear about and that they want to look for and explore. Variety is something that we aimed for in developing this game, and I think we managed to do that too. “
He also emphasized that mounted combat is not required in the game and that players can only consider this as an additional option.
Elden Ring will be available on February 25, 2022 for Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 | 5 and PC.
