The long wait for the eagerly anticipated time travel RPG Crystals is finally over. After seven years of development, we thought about how much work went into this overly ambitious indie project. The developers of the Colombian studio Dreams Uncorporated made it clear from day one how passionate they are for this project and have not made any compromises in the implementation of their unique vision – and that is no exaggeration. With an entire game world to explore in the past, present and future, with drastic changes due to choices you make during the story, almost every building, character and enemy had to be drawn and animated three times.
Ultimately, it is this attention to detail that made this project such an inspiring and fun project. To them, Crystals is more than just a turn-b ased RPG, it’s an amalgamation of all that is great about indie gaming and Colombian culture, which has inspired many of the designs and locations of the characters you will explore in the game.
The overwhelming support we’ve received from the community over the past few years has kept the team going. From sharing fan art on social media to meeting in person at PAX and E3, commenting on new trailers and even cosplaying as your favorite characters, fan support has gone a long way in making this game what it is Today is.
Time to meet new friends
After a young orphan named Crisbell becomes a new time magici an, Matias, a friendly frog companion, warns her of a catastrophic fate awaiting her world. Determined to save her home, Crisbell will build a brigade of colorful companions to prevent the time empress and her vision of a catastrophic future. On her journey, she will recruit Christopher the Mage Warrior, the Defensive Expert who wears a split shield, Willhelm the Child Mage who commands magic to aid his group, Zas the Wild Card who attacks with a selection of luck-based items, and JKR-721, an android that uses its increased speed to channel electricity to unleash a barrage of attacks. Up to three members can be active in your party at the same time, so combine and combine your favorites!
Change the past to change the present and save the future
Crisbell’s skills as a time mage allow you to see the past, present and future on one screen all at the same time. As you explore the different kingdoms, these triangular windows give you a window into each of these eras that Matias can interact with directly by hopping between them. These are updated in real time, so the decisions you make in various quests and side quests show the impact of your actions in all three time zones. Every decision you make will affect the way the world develops, and you will be able to instantly witness how those decisions shape the future for better or for worse.
A unique spin on turn-based combat
These unique time characteristics also apply to combat. Throwing an enemy into the past or future can manipulate their age, make them younger and inexperienced, cause less damage, or make them old and frail, thereby falling their defenses. This power can also be combined with the abilities of your party members – inflicting William’s poison on an enemy that deals damage over several rounds can be used all at once when the enemy is thrown into the future, takes large burst damage and prevents them from to cure it. Likewise, a heavily armored enemy struck by Christopher’s water magic can be thrown into the future, where the water has rusted the armor and reduced its defensive properties. However, some enemies can get stronger over time – an old and injured monster thrown into the past can become more agile and aggressive. Knowing how your group’s skills work together and how the time manipulation affects different enemies will be crucial in surviving some of the tougher fights in the game. Crystals‘Vibrant world has so much to do and see that it’s almost impossible to see it all the first time. With the ability to watch the world grow and change, everyone, including the background characters, will have their own story to tell. A stroll past a soldier in the city makes him appear in seconds as a young boy who has trained in the past, a respected soldier in the present, and a retired and battle-hardened old man in the future.
