Dad’s monster house was developed by Cotton Game, a studio specializing in creating unique puzzle games. While the art style is seemingly spooky and suspenseful, its story is genuinely sentimental with an even more heartwarming ending. We are very happy to share this Dad’s monster house will be part of this year’s [email protected] Winter Games Demo Event! With Dad’s Monster House, we wanted to give those heartbreaking memories a chance to redeem themselves. We wanted to dedicate this game to scientists, my childhood dreams, those I love and faded memories.

When I was a child, my mother told me a story about a man-made creature. I later realized that this story was taken from a novel called ” Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley. It was a cool story and when I was eight years old my dream was to be a scientist.

There is a saying that as a child you are allowed to have your own dream; But when you grow up, every dream becomes exactly the same – to get rich!

I never became a scientist. Instead, I became a game developer. Deep down, I still regret not achieving my childhood dreams. That’s why I wanted to make this game – I wanted to tell a story about a scientist. The story had to be dark, scary and emotional. The graphics also had to be dark, unique and instantly memorable. And the ending had to be sad and moving.

I started with a sketch of Frankenstein, the man-made monster. This set the art style for the rest of the game’s black and white sketches. All my friends told me not to make a game that looked like this. They said, “Your style is all about color, what advantage do you have by making black and white games?” They also said, “Puzzle solving, black and white and narrative? – You’ll probably make less money if you combine all three of these categories.” They all seemed to have a point.

I replied, “I know it sounds harsh, but I want to take this challenge – just to live up to my own dreams.” But then they said, “Don’t be so naive. Developing a game is about understanding and respecting the market, don’t live in your own stubbornness and naivety. You must seriously study the market first before setting up this new project.”

I thought to myself, even if you all tell me not to be frivolous with ideas, I’m still going to make this game the way I want it.

The game was difficult enough to make. After five years of stumbling, Dad’s monster house finally goes live. As the name suggests, there are many monsters in the game. They are not demons in the traditional sense; They’re just creepy creatures that aren’t from our world. They have minds, hearts and souls just like us. In a way, they represent the minds of the scientists in the game. They also represent the real-life personalities of some of us game developers…

While playing the game, pacing the room with thuds of footsteps, surrounded by puzzles and darkness, I felt these little monsters sitting quietly in a corner, looking very lonely. At that moment I also felt lonely.

There’s another saying, “If you’re different, you’re bound to be lonely.” We finished the game. And we really enjoyed it ourselves. And that was enough.

No matter what people say, I would say to them, “In this mediocre world, I just want to live for once just for my stubbornness and childishness.”

We hope you enjoy this game as much as we do and remind you of your memories, dreams and family.

Freud once said, “Love and work, work and love… that’s all there is.” But what about the pain, the struggles that arise when we are forced to choose between our ambition and love? In dealing with such conundrums, we’ve all probably hurt those we hold dear. We often feel safest in the dark. With Dad’s Monster House, I want to give those heartbreaking memories a chance to redeem themselves. I dedicate it to scientists, my childhood dreams; To the ones I love and to faded memories. I hope that you will find in you the best answers, be it for love, for science or for dreams.
[Gameplay]A sudden phone call in the middle of the night sends you back to a house you haven’t visited in many years. You must solve puzzle after puzzle to find clues in memory-twisted scenes and uncover your father’s mystery. The choice to redeem or ultimately end this sad story is in your hands.
[Features]Instead of going for bright and vibrant colors, I went for a black and white art style. The fragmented narrative, numerous puzzles and delicate sound designs create an immersive experience where you, the player, can really feel the ups and downs of the protagonist’s emotions. Continue to unravel the story as you collect more items…
