Each player has their iconic games from the different video game genres and Empty room often tops their list when it comes to sci-fi survival horror.
Before the Motive team even began the tedious task of reimagining this classic title, we decided that reaching the most dedicated fans was a priority. Why? Because our ultimate goal was to remain as true to the original as possible.
Getting feedback from the most passionate players we could find helped the team make informed decisions, rather than relying on internal opinions as game work progressed. The question, “What do players really want from a remake?” was always in the foreground.
Redesigning the game for the Frostbite engine offered new opportunities to modernize every aspect of the game – from new atmospheric 3D audio to refined visual effects (VFX) that help increase the mystery, excitement and immersion for players to intensify on today’s platforms.
Of course, that’s not to say that updating the visual and audio effects were the only changes made. Along with stunning visual fidelity and thrilling atmospheric audio updates, there are also gameplay improvements including updated zero-g traversal, refined combat/dismemberment, enemy damage effects, and more. It also enriches the narrative with the addition of lore elements from all three original games, new side quests, and deeper character backstories for both new and experienced players.
If you never played the original Empty room, it’s a sci-fi survival horror game in which you’ll take on the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer tasked with repairing the USG Ishimura. You discover the crew has been wiped out and your beloved partner is missing. Armed with only your technical background and tools of the trade, try to figure out what happened to your partner and the rest of the USG Ishimura crew. Your fight for survival is not only against the ship’s escalating horrors, but also against your own crumbling sanity.
