By using a whip and wits, players will be more successful in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle than with a gun.
In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, players are encouraged to crack the whip rather than reach for the gun.
MachineGames, actually experts in first-person shooters and thus in gameplay with weapons, suggests whip and brains.
Creative Director Axel Torvenius told Edge Magazine: “We don’t encourage gunplay. It’s not promoted as the primary way forward. The primary way forward is always trying to use your mind and your whip.”
That makes sense, after all, Professor Jones is no Rambo. In the films, he also uses his brains and whip to escape dangerous situations. MachineGames has understood that too.
“Indy doesn’t have any superpowers. Very often you notice that it’s not easy for him to be in a fight. At the end of the day, he’s a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist. He just has this passion that constantly puts him in strange situations with enemies and traps,” says Torvenius.
“It wouldn’t do the character justice if he was constantly shooting at all enemies, and the team at MachineGames wants to emphasize the level of danger. We tried to capture the feeling that it’s very dangerous to be shot at when you have to engage in combat. It’s also very dangerous to shoot at enemies because they have an alarm system and reinforcements will arrive.”
You will still find many weapons in the game. However, they can also be used as close combat weapons, which is much quieter than conventional use, as game director Jerk Gustafsson adds.
Gustafsson said: “We have a game where there are a lot of weapons, but you choose not to use them because it’s too loud and too dangerous. You can pick up a gun and use it as a close combat weapon. That’s a very in-character use of a weapon for Indiana Jones.”
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on December 9th for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Xbox Game Pass. It will also be released for PlayStation 5 in spring 2025.
