Diablo IV reveals Mercenaries and Dark Citadels in Xbox livestream at Gamescom.

Finally, there will be progression updates that will permanently and fundamentally change how you level up and progress in Sanctuary. More on that on August 29th, so stay tuned for more details.
Mercenaries and the Dark Citadel come to Diablo IV in Vessel of Hatred
Never fight alone again! You’ve already seen Neyrelle in the cinematic trailer. And you’ve had a taste of the newest Spiritborn class. Now check out the Mercenaries and the Dark Citadel, two new elements introduced in Diablo IV’s first expansion, Vessel of Hatred.
Fighting together has never been better!
- Mercenaries – Your companions in battle. They grow stronger over time and can be customized to enhance your own play style.
-
- Each mercenary is unique in their role, with their own backstory, personality, and skills. They also have their own skill trees with a variety of choices that make them more support-oriented, combat-oriented, or a mix of both. Mercenaries can be recruited as reinforcements and will come to your aid at regular intervals to carry out attacks.
-
-
- Raheir – He was born into the lawless and harsh streets of Gea Kul and trained by the Iron Wolves.
- Varjana – A former cannibal who left her tribe when it began to trade with dark forces. She is a butcher by trade and became a mercenary.
- Aldkin – A creature that is half child, half demon, born half demonic due to the influence of the First Khazra of the Citadel, who performed dark rituals on his mother.
- sip – A disgraced mountain archer who is shunned by the same people who saw him as their salvation. He is now a bounty hunter.
-
-
- Mercenaries gain Rapport as they accompany you in the world. The more Rapport you earn, the more valuable rewards and trade assets are unlocked. As you collect Rapport, you can trade with your mercenaries and enter into trade agreements for a chance at powerful loot and other items.
- The Dark Citadel – A new co-op PvE endgame experience that combines multiplayer mechanics with action-packed dungeon combat and boss battles.
- Enter the Dark Citadel with any party size of 2-4 players and fight complex bosses that require coordination and shared forces as you advance on separate paths. Communicate nonverbally with your team with the new tagging system.
- Earn Weekly Chests by completing the Dark Citadel each week to receive powerful loot as well as unique Dark Citadel cosmetic rewards.
- Lower Town of Kurast – An exciting new multi-stage time attack dungeon, great for both level progression and late-game item farming.
- You can influence the type of loot by using special keys called Spirit Tributes, and improve the quality of your loot by completing challenges in the dungeon and then defeating one of the brand new bosses in the Undercity.
- Progress Update – The character progression system will experience a major upgrade with the release of Vessel of Hate a fundamental update.
- Building on the fundamental changes made to loot in Season 4, these progression updates mean permanent changes to the base game.
Tune in on August 29th to watch a developer livestream detailing all the changes, including difficulty updates, the Paragon system, and more.
