Discontinued games do not fit into the new strategy

Square Enix stopped developing games because they didn’t fit the new strategy.

Square Enix described the discontinuation of games as incompatible with the new plans for a multiplatform strategy.

The developer had already announced changes to the development process in March. They want to improve the quality of their games, which is why they can expect “losses when abandoning content”.

With yesterday’s publication of the financial results for the 2024 financial year, there were a few more details.

It reported an extraordinary loss from the sale of content of $141 million. This also had an impact on profits, which fell by almost 70 percent compared to the previous year.

Square Enix described the cancellation of the games as essentially “terminating development work on some important content in the digital entertainment segment.” They therefore do not fit into the company’s new medium-term plans, especially for HD games.

Called “Square Enix Reboots and Awakens,” the strategy involves high-quality games, satisfied and happy players, and pursuing an aggressive multiplatform strategy.

Of the canceled projects, Square Enix said: “A project-by-project review of the feasibility of further development determined that these particular efforts are inconsistent with the group’s revised approach to HD game development, which includes goals such as multiplatform development and empowerment reflects internal development capacities.”
