According to former BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn, the cross-gen release of Dragon Age: Inquisition dashed some of the team’s ambitions.
In addition to its genre-defining works, the development studio BioWare is also known for recurring problems during the development phases of its ambitious projects.
One such game that might come to mind for some fans is Dragon Age: Inquisition, released in 2014.
In a recent interview with United States today the former BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn gave some insights into the development work at BioWare at that time.
According to Flynn, adapting the Frostbite engine for the RPG was a Herculean task, but the bigger problem was the cross-gen release. This destroyed many of the team’s ambitions:
“I would say the biggest compromise was that we had to release Inquisition for the Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same time as the PS4 and Xbox One. That killed so many ambitions because we didn’t have the team size or time to really differentiate these things. So you had to find the lowest common denominator. And when that became clear, it certainly shattered some of the expectations and ambitions that we had for certain gameplay features.”
“By contrast, CD Projekt didn’t do that a few months later with The Witcher 3, and I think that’s why their game was better.”
