Dragon Ball: The Breakers is the newest game in our Dragon Ball games catalogue, and it’s one of the most unique straight away! I played the open beta test along with the many players who participated and boy did I have a blast. Whether I was playing with my friends or online with random matchmaking, nothing beats the satisfaction of successfully escaping the raider with my survivor teammates or achieving that victory by destroying all survivors as a raider.
With that said, let’s talk about the game, and here are some tips that leverage my experience from open beta testing!
As a survivor, players have one ultimate goal – to escape! Whether it’s resetting the timeline by finding the five hidden Power Keys to activate the Super Time Machine, or using the Miniature Escape Time Machine. If you can escape, that’s a win in our book.
You can equip your survivor with different skills and tools to help you in your escape. Travel long distances with the grappling hook and flotation device, or distract the raider by throwing a smoke bomb or solar flare in their path. Using these different tools and skills will give you an edge in this area. There are many tools and abilities to discover, so try them out and find a combination that suits you and your playstyle.
Players can also be outfitted with special Survivor skins that feature iconic Dragon Ball characters – The Farmer, Bulma, and Oolong. Each Survivor skin has abilities unique to their character. Oolong can transform to remain hidden, Bulma can distract raiders with her charms, and the farmer can dig for items.
What makes the Survivor experience unique is the ability to equip items called Transpheres on your character. Transspheres are special orbs that carry the soul of a super warrior. They temporarily allow survivors to “switch dragons” and borrow the powers of popular Dragon Ball characters to escape the raider. Some abilities include Goku’s Kamehameha, Vegeta’s Galick Gun, and Tien Shinhan’s Solar Flare.
But don’t be fooled. The power of the Transsphere, while powerful, is temporary, and it’s up to you to decide when the right time to use this trump card is. Will you use these powers to escape, or will you use them to defend the Super Time Machine and your teammates?
You can’t escape alone! The Raider is immensely powerful, so the survivors must work together as a team to stand a chance of survival. During a game, you must work together as a team of seven to collect all of the Power Keys to activate the Super Time Machine. Once a team member finds a Power Key, any team member can hire it. Consider splitting them up to ensure the team finds the Power Keys quickly and avoid the raider spotting everyone in one area. If you start hearing your character’s heartbeat, the raider is nearby, so hide so he can’t find you.
The survivors can use fun and whimsical Dragon Ball stickers to communicate with each other. For example, you can collect all seven Dragon Orbs to summon Shenron and make your team stronger. When you realize that all those Dragon Balls have been collected, you can use a sticker to call your teammates to the altar and summon Shenron! We also saw the Krillin screaming for help sticker, which is used to summon teammates to revive fallen comrades. Of course, it’s still up to them if they want to take the risk and save you! These character stickers offer a global way to communicate with fun Dragon Ball expressions.
Work together with your teammates and use the tools and unique abilities to strategically plan your escape from the Raider.
As the survivors work together to achieve their ultimate escape goals, the Raider is on the hunt to seek and destroy! Raiders are known rivals from Dragon Ball, and players can choose between Cell, Frieza, and Majin Buu.
Each raider has four evolutions, each unique. Cell is an “all-rounder” type with a fast growth rate and average searching abilities. Frieza specializes in searching and has excellent scouting skills, making it even more difficult for survivors to hide. Majin Buu was recently revealed to be a “high risk, high return guy” where he gets off to a slow start compared to the other two Raiders, but offers an extremely rewarding and powerful experience once you reach his third and fourth forms. What makes the Raider experience unique is the fact that new abilities become accessible with each evolution. Raiders aren’t immediately powerful, and the game rewards you with more power for destroying the environment, civilians, and survivors!
The map is huge, so finding survivors can be difficult at times. Each raider has specific abilities that allow them to scout. For example, Frieza can use his scouter to find the survivors in his first form, but Cell needs to transform into his 2nd form to use Ki detection.
Here’s a fun tip: Raiders can pick up a Dragon Radar and use it to find survivors, as many of them will be holding Dragon Balls! Raiders can also use this opportunity to collect the Dragon Balls and either become stronger, heal wounds, or become immortal. Why do you want to be invincible? Believe it or not, Survivors can accumulate enough morphing power to do some serious damage. Don’t underestimate teamwork!
Whether you enjoy working together with teammates to defeat an overwhelmingly powerful opponent or find joy in being the player who devastates others, Dragon Ball: The Breakers has something to offer for everyone. Every match is different, and players can approach the game with different character builds to fit their playstyle.
