There are good reasons to tell a story in an open world game. In Dragon’s Dogma 2 it’s affinity.
Affinity also plays a big role in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and it even seems to be one of the strongest reasons why the game is an open world game. Affinity records how close a character is to the Arisen. Affinity can be improved through gifts, conversations or completing certain quests.
According to director Hideaki Itsuno, affinity is actually the main reason why Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an open-world game, he explained in an interview with Au tomaton-Media. There are events that happen or don’t happen depending on the affinity. The relationships between the NPCs also play a role within this system. For example, a child’s affinity for Arisen increases when the parent’s affinity towards him improves.
You’ll be able to see how this works when Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches on March 22nd for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
