In the version of Dragon's Dogma II adapted for the PS5 Pro, the new PSSR technology shows its weaknesses.

The experts at Digital Foundry have examined the Dragon's Dogma 2 adaptations for the PS5 Pro and share the good and bad news on YouTube.

The three different modes that the PS5 Pro offers were tested. The “Balanced” option joins the now frequently used performance and quality modes.

This mode is intended to build a bridge between the two extremes. This isn't really noticeable in the graphics settings, but more so in the resolution at which the game is rendered.

The range here ranges from 720p in performance mode to 1080p with the balanced option up to 1440p if you opt for maximum image quality. In all three cases, the new PSSR technology is then used to upscale the image to 4K.

Some weaknesses of the new technology, at least in the case of the RPG from Capcom, are particularly evident in the performance mode, in which the PSSR has to do the most “rework”.

Fine details such as foliage, tiles or the grain of wood appear much more pixelated than is the case in the other two modes or on the base model of the PS5. If you walk along a forest path, you will also notice a slight shimmer beneath the layer of grass.

Likewise, there is often more image noise indoors. You can see this particularly well when you stand in a dark room and look outside through an open door. In many cases, an unsightly flickering remains.

Nevertheless, the frame rate benefits considerably from the higher performance of the PS5 Pro and averages an increase of 40 percent. This can sometimes be more, for example in the cutscenes, or sometimes less when you are wandering through a city full of people.

It remains to be seen whether PSSR performance will be further optimized with future updates.
