The creative director and co-creator of the Mortal Kombat saga used their social networks to consult with fans on a possible return of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. This return to life of the 2005 title would come back as a remaster or with a continuation of the title, which, at least, was the root of the query.
The original title was released in 2005 for the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 and, unlike the rest of the games in the series, it's not a fighting title but a beat them which tells the story of what happened in Mortal Kombat 2 from the perspective of Kung Lao and Liu Kang. The game could be enjoyed single-player or two-player in a proposition that retained several classic IP elements such as the inevitable death and the handsets.

So far, the poll results suggest that the community would be more than happy to receive a remaster of the original title as the first option, although the sequel is also a highly voted idea. This last possibility maybe I would see Raiden as the protagonist taking into account Boon's original idea.
NetherRealm, for its part, continues to develop Mortal Kombat 12 which many believe could arrive in 2023.
