I am Badru, Tenderfoot tactics“Director, and I’m writing this post to introduce you to the game we’ve just announced for Xbox platforms, available for pre-order today ahead of its full release on February 21st.
Tenderfoot tactics utilizes both Play Anywhere and Smart Delivery, allowing you to transport your goblin squad across a variety of platforms, such as the Xbox Series S|X, where you explore the archipelago at 60 frames per second and a native 1440p 4k resolution -Resolution (each).
I’ve been playing it again on my Series S and it’s a great joy to be reminded of what a strange, unique and addictive game it is. So what is it?
A wild, chaotic tactical game without chance
Above all else, Tenderfoot tactics is a game about strategic thinking in small, grid-based, turn-based battles. The battles are fast, tricky and wild. A mistake can result in a variety of consequences, but through skillful play a seemingly impossible battle can be restored and turned into a victory. In keeping with its goblin-brained ethos, it encourages risky, aggressive tactics.
Unlike most games of this type, in Tenderfoot tactic, Skills always do exactly what they say: there are no damage ranges or chance to hit. Thanks to a random number generator, you never have to restart a battle. Nevertheless, the fights are anything but predictable.
Chaos Through Complexity: Natural Systems
Water flows downhill, collects in valleys and seeps into the ground.
Plants multiply and remove moisture from the soil.
Fire spreads through dry plants (and goblins).
Like in the real world, Tenderfoot tactics Natural systems are deterministic, but are so interdependent that it is impossible to truly know the results of an action and their evolution is beautiful to watch.
At the start of the game, your goblins will be relative underdogs to magic, but as you gain power you can evolve them into advanced races: wizards and forest witches, liches, elementalists, and other strange creatures. Soon you’ll be summoning meteors, building mountains, electrifying lakes, opening volcanic chasms, and much more.
Exploring the archipelago
Here too, different than most games of this type: Tenderfoot tactics takes place in an enormously large world and has a light, exploratory, non-linear story.
Very early in the game you will be faced with a goal that is both distant and vague, and you will have to chart your own path to get there. Don’t worry if you feel lost. Take some time to sail around and look for landmarks or points of interest. Collect birds and use them to fly higher and further.
As you roam, your goblins will express their impulsive desires: to follow their noses to a nearby herb, or perhaps to visit the city on the horizon. Take in any clues that seem interesting to you. There is no wrong way to spend your time in the archipelago.
Tips for new players
The tutorials are all available in your pause menu at any time. Don’t be afraid to skip them if they’re too long to read at first, but do read them sometime! The game is much more fun when you fully understand its systems, which are quite simple.
You can change your goblins’ abilities at any time outside of combat, and for the starting race, the base goblin, this is completely free.
The game features dynamic difficulty adjustment and has very few consequences for fleeing a fight. So if a fight is too difficult for you, just run!
