Do not worry about it. Yes, this is the third title in this trilogy, but there is no better time to start organizing your troops and building empires in the world of Warhammer Fantasy. The game begins with a brand new experience, a bespoke narrative campaign designed to bring you up to speed and brush up on fallen generals in both the basics and advanced techniques of warmongering. This prologue campaign features an epic story that leads into the main game’s story.
Total War, whether set in a historical period or in a fantastic world, is a two-mode game: on the campaign map, you manage settlements and advance your armies to expand your fiefdoms. When your army encounters an enemy, combat will resume and the game will switch to the second mode: a tactical battle with potentially hundreds of warriors under your command.
The prologue begins in the game’s campaign level and teaches basic movement, building, and settlement management. As the campaign progresses, the settlements you conquer will become larger and offer more building options. Soon you will be managing a growing number of camps, gaining riches and feeding troops. Even in the harsh environments of the Chaos Wastes.
Of course, conquering these settlements requires an army, and the prologue presents this facet of the game in a clear way. Do not worry! You don’t need to know the difference between a Bloodletter and Bloodthirster to get started. You start out with a few human units, which you can use to recruit a good mix of ranged, melee, and cavalry before jumping into the fray. Even then, you have Gerik, your trusty brother in the narrative, to guide you through those early maneuvers – there’s nothing quite like seeing your first successful attack mow down the enemy!
