Although many cannot handle them due to the feeling of fear and anguish they cause, horror games have thousands of fans. And it’s a genre that has no shortage of releases since almost every month we have an interesting proposition to put in our mouths. Recently, my colleague Frank MS presented here the analysis of Impious and today it’s me who does the same by telling you my analysis of Fear the spotlight.
The game arrived on Xbox on October 22 and was developed by a team of just two developers, Comfortable playmates. Thanks to Blumhouse Games In its edition we now have the game available on all current and next generation platforms. As soon as we see the images that accompany this analysis, we see that the retro aesthetic permeates everything and that this will be one of its characteristics. Let’s see if it’s just the aesthetic There attractive or if there is something else behind it.
A story with a classic beginning
At the level of historyIt all starts with two teenagers from a high school who apparently infiltrated the high school itself at ungodly hours, when there is no one left in the classrooms and there are no no more staff inside. With the classic profiles of one girl perhaps taking on more of the good girl role and another acting as a rebellious “thug”, the adventure begins in a manner also seen in other films of the genre. A Ouija will be the one which will mark the starting point of this adventure, about which we prefer not to reveal anything.
Argumentatively, in addition to our own experiences, Most of the plot is told to us through notes and sheets scattered throughout the settings.which will serve to better understand everything that happened and why. I have to say that the plot won’t blow you away but, especially at the beginning, it will make you want to know more. Afterwards, it loses some steam due to its predictability, but it remains interesting.
Very satisfying gameplay
And in the playable part? Well, then, the formula fixed by the first resident Evil and style games. With a third-person camera (which will not be fixed but will follow us with our movement), we will have to explore the scenarios in search of objects that will allow us to unlock the path we must follow. In this sense, we will use the usual premises of the genre: from the key that opens a door to other tools that allow us to access new objects necessary for another access.
In many cases it will not be enough to approach the area with which we must interact, but rather, as if it were a graphic adventure, it will be necessary to interact with a certain part of what we see on the screen. ‘screen.. For example, if you see a ventilation plate, you will have to slide the cursor over the screws to be able to unscrew them. So that adds, I think, a really nice extra layer of gameplay to stop it from just finding the right item.
Affordable puzzles for everyone
Yes there will be no shortage of puzzleswhere we will also have to interact with objects that “give play” in different positions, etc. All of them are completely logical and will only require a few observations on our part. Most of them have clues to solve that won’t be far away and that the game itself strives to provide us with by marking certain words in blue. The difficulty level will therefore not be very high and once you have experience in this type of game, you will find the solution very quickly. Plus, exploration seems simple and you won’t have to make long turns or walk to get to one point or another in the scene.
If we have to cross a corridor, we must be careful, because another of the mechanical playable Fear the spotlight It is the presence, of course, an “enemy home” against which we will be defenseless. Sometimes itself and other times simply a projector on the ceiling, you must avoid the light at all costs if you don’t want to die (you can get hurt once or twice, and you can heal yourself with objects) . Thus, there is added a stealth mechanic that I found well resolved and well implemented, without being overwhelming or anecdotal.
Analysis of Fear the Spotlight: A great gateway to terrorism
To finish the gameplay block and as a summary, I must say that It feels like a classic game in many ways, but it may be the perfect entry for many people into this type of gaming.
Technically, we happily travel to the past
As for the technical aspectGiven the aesthetic of Fear the Spotlight, we had no performance failures. We can configure the look and make it more or less retro by tapping a few settings, but the default experience is great. Actually I think the polygonal effect makes it even scarier by leaving more room for the player’s imagination.. The game comes with English voices and Spanish texts. Furthermore, the Quick CV It works perfectly, even though the game has a fairly frequent autosave.
Analysis Fear the Spotlight: Conclusions
To finish, and by way of conclusionsI must say that my impressions were very favorable. Even if it doesn’t reinvent the horror genre, it does everything it does very well. Its duration of 3 hours may seem a little shortbut they have one in store for us final surprise which increases its duration. Fear the spotlight is very recommended to everyone players, taking into account the fact that Those who have a lot of experience in this genre may find it somewhat lacking in offerings and content..
Pro.
- Aesthetics and everything to do with the tone of the game
- It’s a very accessible game and it executes what it sets out to do very well.
