Finally, Square Enix released Final Fantasy 16 on PC in September 2023, after a period of exclusivity on PlayStation 5 that lasted more than a year. However, it seems that the hype around the game has diminished significantly over this period, which is reflected in sales on the PC platform.
According to the company’s latest financial report, the game It only sold 289,000 units on PC since its launch, which is a worrying number considering the number of players on Steam. In fact, the game peaked at just 27.5 players on Steam at launch, which by all accounts is a very low number for a title as big as FF16.
Xbox could benefit from it
Although few sales were expected, it appears the company was once again disappointed. Square Enix’s operating profit and revenue declined massively, resulting in a loss of nearly $350 million in market capitalization.
In response to this, the Japanese have changed their strategy and are moving towards multiplatform releases. PC and Xbox versions are expected to happen on day one, which could help increase sales and attract more players. Additionally, the company also intends to bring several of its previous games to Xbox.
Square Enix’s decision to release Final Fantasy 16 on PC after a period of exclusivity on PlayStation 5 may have hurt sales, after all, it removed some of the initial marketing and “novelty” effect. It’s been a long wait and the desire to get the game is perhaps lessening every month, so sales end up suffering.
