Discover the origins of Go to the Mecha Balla game that emerged from late-night ideas during parental leave.
A unique game where a rolling ball transforms into a powerful mecha and catches the attention of the internet.
From going viral to securing funding from Microsoft, it’s a developer’s dream come true.
Go to the Mecha Ball began with a critical look at classic top-down shooters during the contemplative nights of my paternity leave. I questioned the traditional use of rolling just for dodging. What if rolling could be offensive? What if an object known for bumping into things could also shoot? This train of thought led to the idea of a ball, an object that represents rolling and kinetic energy that transforms into a powerful mecha. This concept laid the foundation for a game that combines action and strategy in a unique way.
I began developing this idea into a prototype, using my new procedural animation system to ensure that the transformation between ball and mecha was not only visually appealing, but also seamless – a crucial element to the fun and engagement of the game. The goal was to create something different: a game that was as fun to watch as it was to play.
After a short break due to parental security and getting used to a new job, I started working on the prototype again. To my surprise, it didn’t take long for Microsoft to take notice Go to the Mecha Ball. Her decision to support the project was transformative. It took my late night prototype and turned it in to a serious game development company Go to the Mecha Ball
Now, Go to the Mecha Ball will leave its mark on the gaming world. This game is a testament to the power of a good idea and what can be achieved when creativity meets opportunity. It’s more than just a game – it’s a journey from a simple but innovative concept to an exciting adventure. Go to the Mecha Ball is ultimately a love letter to what I think is most important in games: the feel of the game.
