Game Pass moons: Fallout New Vegas

Fallout, game, Moons, Pass, Vegas

The first deliveries of Fall they weren’t very successful, as we mentioned recently. However, the germ of the great franchise that would be in the future was already there. For those who don’t know her yet, Fall is an RPG franchise set in a dystopian future, in a devastated United States after a nuclear war. Today we remember one of the franchise’s most memorable episodes in this pseudo-analysis, Fallout New Vegas.

We must go back to 2010, more than ten years ago for the release of this Fallout: New Vegas. Obisidian has hit the table and they’ve shown that role-playing games deep in mechanics and history can be done, even in first person. Welcome again on a Monday in this section, to talk about 1 of 20 Bethesda. Although for whoever writes these lines, it is “The Game”. We start.

The life of a high school

The tranche that concerns us now is set in 2281, more than 200 years after the fall of the nuclear bombs. We are in the Mojave Desert, in the city of Las Vegas, or as it is now called in the game New Vegas. Here we play the role of a minor character. A simple delivery man seeking revenge after being shot and left for dead while carrying a package to the city of New Vegas.

Although many are surprised to play as a “person”, this was one of the main characteristics of the game. Fall originals. Fall is a franchise that wants to tell us the story of a world, of those who live there. We matter less than what surrounds us. The different factions and their members, or our companions, are the ones who have a true story to tell us, beyond us.

The real Fallout 3

One detail that few people may know is that already in 2003 there was a Fallout 3 in development, before Bethesda acquired the franchise. This project, called Neighbors, was canceled, but much of what had been thought out for this game was then reused in New Vegas. Although not everything was bad after this cancellation. We have to admit to Bethesda that the matches are now more fun, and that the franchise will abandon the aerial view. Without these changes, the Fallout series would still be niche games, and not the best sellers they currently are.

Point and part are the changes in the world that the game presents compared to the previous installment. Fallout New Vegas is moving away from the totally ruined world, many of which came with Fallout 3 in the franchise criticized at the time. How can there be vegetation in a post-apocalyptic world? Easy, it’s been over 200 years and life is making its way. And why is the Brotherhood of Steel not the protagonist? They never really have been. In the original installments they were just one more faction, it was yet another “shift” to Bethesda’s marketing machine, reusing them in every installment.

Old and new mechanics

Fallout New Vegas is therefore (was) an evolution of the saga at its launch. The combat system is still based on first person shots, with the ability to slow down time for a moment. and photograph specific parts. Little change here with a more arcade shooting system, adjusting more damage than aiming, so that our character will no longer run out of net hits per ability, instead, he will do less damage.

The management of companions is perhaps one of the points where the game advances the most compared to the previous installment. It’s a pleasant joy that the saga recovers almost the same, a system that was already in Fallout 2, but Bethesda left on its way for the third installment, or was it just as a post to sell it later as a novelty? The important thing is that now our companions are no longer just pack mules but we can decide which weapon they carry, how far they stay, whether they are aggressive or passive, or how much they heal.

Play New Vegas in 2021

But Fallout New Vegas isn’t perfect. Many will remember this for bugs like the one in the image (archive) above, but luckily we’re getting more than fixes and decent gameplay for open world play.. Another aspect that I agree to criticize is the change in the color scheme. We went from a more appropriate, green and gray predominant to me in Washington DC of Fallout 3, to the brown of the Las Vegas Strip. It gives it a more western game look that I know I want, but it loses its personality and franchise image.

Finally, graphically it has aged regularly, at the time the game was not a pointer, so nowadays animations and textures leave a lot to be desired. So is it a game that can be played in 2021? Well, if you haven’t spent it already its story is undoubtedly vibrant, but I’ve done it 2 times back then, I have fond memories, and I’m going to play his younger brother, The Outer Worlds, which the last DLC came out recently.
