I’m Niklas Istenes, the CEO of Bitwave Games – a modern retro gaming studio from Gothenburg, Sweden. I founded the studio in 2013 with a dream goal: to develop and publish games inspired by my all-time favorite Nintendo Entertainment System and Famicom gimmick! from legendary developer Sunsoft. Little did I know that I would eventually help launch it gimmick! for modern platforms with our friends from City Connection. It feels surreal and beyond exciting!
gimmick! has a special place in my heart. Released in 1992 and at the end of the NES/Famicom life cycle, it was impressive to see a game that pushed the console to the limit. The graphics, physics and soundtrack really shaped me as a kid. In Scandinavia (where I’m from) it’s known as Mister Gimmick. It was the only market outside of Japan where the original game was ever released. So for many people, this could be a total lost gaming treasure.
gimmick! special edition is a hard-hitting platformer with a heavy focus on physics. You play as Yumetaro – a cute green youkai with special star summoning powers. Across multiple playground-like levels, each with their own twists on the environment and exciting creatures, you must use your twinkling star creatively to hop, jump, take out baddies, and reach hidden areas full of secrets.
gimmick! special edition has many improvements that make this challenging game even more accessible for modern players.
