The legendary GoldenEye 007 could appear again on Xbox! Indeed, a new hit list just appeared on the Trueachievements website for the game. At the same time, we were able to confirm at the same time that James Thomas, Lead Engineer at Rare, has had access to the game since October 2021.
A story with twists and turns
You know, Rare was bought by Microsoft in 2002, and with it a lot of games and licenses. Among the most emblematic games from the English studio, we can undoubtedly find GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64, which shaped the history of FPS in the late 90s.
Unsurprisingly, the developers set out to remaster the game in HD that was originally planned for the Xbox Live Arcade program for the Xbox 360. Yes, but now, while the new version of GoldenEye 007 was almost done, the game is stuck in a real legal mess.
Even if Xbox held the intellectual property of the game, Activision actually had the exploitation rights of the James Bond license at the time. Despite the negotiations between the various parties, there was no green light and the remaster ultimately never saw the light of day.
The light at the end of the tunnel?
Since then, the terms of access to the license seem to be more flexible, especially at IO Interactive which is currently working on a new game, but we’ll wait for confirmation from Rare or Xbox before jumping to the ceiling. In fact, this game may just be an internal version that the developers installed on their consoles for the convenience of enjoying the game at home.
In short, we will keep you updated as soon as new information appears in the coming days.
