The new Halo Studios is developing several games in Unreal Engine 5.
Before launching the 2024 Halo World Championship, Microsoft announced a “new dawn” for the Halo series: 343 Studios is changing its name (and expanding) to Halo Studioswhile unveiling the use of a new graphics engine and a new gaming philosophy.
From now on, the Halo series will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. All projects will use this engine, with “several new games” already in development. Pierre Hintze, head of the studio, declared that it was not so much a break as a page turning:
“If we analyze Halo in detail, we have two very distinct chapters. Chapter 1: Bungie. Chapter 2: 343 industries. Now I think we have an audience that wants more. So we’re not just going to try to improve development efficiency, but also change the way we make Halo games. So, today we begin a new chapter. “Everyone is here to make the best Halo games possible.”
The announcement video includes a first look at the new direction Halo Studios is currently taking, including footage of the team experimenting with Unreal Engine 5.. To be clear, these images “are not a game”, but rather a research project known as the “Foundry” (a location made up of three unique biomes, where Halo rings are born), which allows Halo Studios to prepare for the “next steps” of creating Halo games.
“It’s fair to say that our intention is that most of what we show at Foundry will be planned for projects we’re building or future projects.”
Halo Studios has confirmed that it is working with Unreal creators Epic Games to ensure the series can reach new heights.. The move to UE5 also means that it is now a “simpler process” to attract new talent as projects progress through development (whereas previously new hires had to learn how to use Slipspace Engine, the graphics engine of Halo Infinite). This means Halo can grow “more quickly and organically” than before. The team says it will also solicit “earlier” and “broader” feedback from players.
