The publisher was working on an MMO for Harry Potter, but stamped it in because they didn’t believe it would be a success.
Kim Salzer was Director of Product Marketing at Electronic Arts from 2000 to 2003. As a guest in the Twitch interview with TheRealBrandolorian, she spoke about games that she was responsible for but that were never released.
As Salzer revealed, an MMO for the Harry Potter franchise was in development. For her personally, the Harry Potter MMO was a big project in which she was directly involved because it was such a big brand.
As Salzer continues, the MMO was an online / offline experience where kids were even sent things like ribbons and prizes. They did research for the game and even developed a beta.
They thought it would be successful, but Electronic Arts changed you at that time and apparently they believed or didn’t know whether this IP would last for more than a year or two. The project was therefore canceled.
