How Detective Dotson brings cooperative cases to your couch

Detective Dotson is a cozy mystery-adventure game inspired by Bollywood and Indian culture, with an aesthetic based on real-life Indian cities. As the titular detective Dotson, you collect clues and solve cases while meeting a colorful cast of characters, each with their own secrets.

And although all this suggests that Detective Dotson is a purely single-player experience, but our Xbox trailer revealed the case for our newest feature – co-op. This came from asking ourselves, “Why don’t more detective games have co-op? After all, every Sherlock needs a Watson.” Developed for Xbox Series X|S, Detective DotsonCo-op mode lets you play pranks with a friend on the couch. Here’s how it works.

Only for two

Co-op cases are specifically designed for two players with their own customized levels. They are independent of and complementary to Detective Dotson’s single-player cases. We did this because we wanted players to work together to solve these cases, which have unique objectives and tasks and really show that sometimes two heads are better than one.

Sure, it is called Detective Dotson but there is a cast of vibrant characters to choose from on your duo adventure. From super cop Durai to adorable reporter Jotson, you’ll never be short of options. We did this to give you the opportunity to play the game your way in co-op mode. Speaking of which…

Power couple

You will use certain actions to survive the many trials and difficulties Detective Dotson‘s co-op campaign presents you with challenges, such as distracting guards while your accomplice sneaks by, or taking advantage of special abilities like Durai’s machismo to break down doors or Jotson’s journalist status to gain privileged access to areas other characters can’t reach.

Split-screen games

Detective Dotson‘s co-op mode features a dynamic split screen. This means that the screen doesn’t split in two when you’re both in the same room. Rather, it only happens when you and your friend are far enough apart. We felt that this helped create a more seamless co-op experience while using the split screen to indicate that the action is happening in two different locations at once, similar to Heist Movies. It took a lot of trial and error to find the optimal time when we would actually split the screen to have the right balance and indication of distance between you and your friend in the game.
