Tales of Kenzera: Broad is about a young shaman named Zau who makes a deal with Kalunga, the god of death, to return his father to the realm of the living in exchange for three great spirits. Zuberi is the character you will be playing when you start the game and he receives a book as a gift from his late father – this book is his father’s last chance to contact him – and you will learn that you living through the eyes of Zuberi will travel the world.
“When I was clearing out my father’s things after his death, he left behind this book that contained his handwriting. And it meant so much to me. Because it felt like I was looking at his handwriting, I could almost bring him back to life by imagining him writing it, and that essentially inspired how we go into this story.”
Telling this story in the Metroidvania space is, as Salim explains, because the rules and structure of the genre behave a lot like mourning. As a player, you are thrown into a strange world that you can never prepare for. But the longer you stay in it and explore the various dark and unknown corners at your own pace, the more comfortable you become.
